In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

epexegesis \ep-ek-si-JEE-sis\, noun
1. the addition of a word or words to explain a preceding word or sentence.
2. the word or words so added.

Example sentences:
But you did establish personal contact? In epexegesis or on a point of order?
-- James Joyce, Finnegan's Wake

One of the most striking peculiarities of colloquial speech in Dutch, and of natural free talk in general, is what is called epexegesis.
-- Jan Gonda, Selected Studies

Etymology:
Epexegesis, a late Renaissance word, is derived from the Greek epexḗgēsis meaning explanation.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I recently ran into an egregious eisegesis of the Greek word “Pais” (pah-heese) in Matthew’s Gospel account of the Roman Centurion whose servant boy, whom he loved like a son, was gravely ill.

A TV Preacher seemed to think the “Pais” was a Military Aide. (Though I could find NO example of this definition from Strong’s or Vine’s), so his interpretation was his own idea. (Eisegesis).

A homosexual site on the internet claimed that, according to Classical Greek sources, it meant that the “pais” was a teenage homosexual lover. Again, this was not supported by either Strong’s or Vine’s, but merely conjecture to suit an agenda. (Eisegesis again!)

I solved the issue by doing a search and found the parallel story in the Book of Luke (A Greek Physician who knows his own native language!) and Luke used the word “doulos” which means “lowly servant”. This confirmed the ORIGINAL meaning of “Pais” in Matthew, and verified that what I accomplished was EXEGESIS.

When conjecture, extra-Biblical Sources, and agenda-driven politics interfere with Exegesis, it becomes Eisegesis!

And the same standard should be applied to all, whether they have good intentions or not! The TV Preacher probably wanted to reach military families with his conjecture, so his intentions were good, but his scholarship was wrong.

The other guys...well, what can I say?

Agendas are powerful things. We should always check to see who is driving ours. Good illustration, extra credit A for you.

Yes. I agree. That’s why I am very skeptical of “leaders”.

Unless it’s ME, of course! hahaha!

My favorite epexegesis is “that’s what she said”

60 and foggy-I wish it would rain again...

If epexegesis was a virtue
Then most senators would be
Recommended for sainthood-
Models of legislative purity

But the Vatican isn’t petitioned
With proof of miracles written down-
We’re stuck with another mobster
Who thinks he wears a crown

We are back now to Nixon’s time
With enemies’ lists and all-
Obama is channeling Tricky Dick
And common sense is in free fall...

I know Nixon was the first politician who wronged you, but this guy is so much worse. A+ for you and you can have the rain headed here tonight.

The depths they plumb while plugging their books...I have to wonder. Was he saying his fans were ignorant for liking his music? It could have been taken either way. Which means he probably had someone else write that book since he can’t communicate a simple idea.

The faithful man, when confronted with the temptations of darkness, or the One True Path, he does the right thing—”ep-ek-si-JEE-sis”

Thank you!

He is indeed worse, and I think one huge reason is because the system of checks and balances, not to mention the outrage is absent or not being paid attention to. We’ve become entirely too accustomed to outrageous and even illegal behavior from those in the public eye-they are no longer held to a higher standard, but a lesser one...

My youngest is getting all kinds of college solicitations following the PLAN and PSAT. Listing Jon Stewart, Rahm Emmanuel and Stephen Colbert are not exactly ringing endorsements for why anyone would want to go to these schools.

Good for your baby-you obviously brought her up right-

That said, I can’t help RME-why would going to a school attended or endorsed by someone followed by scandal and/or controversy be desirable? What about academic standing? Rate of hire after graduation? Or names of graduates who are successful in real business in the real world...
