Joe Paterno's widow is to give her first interview since the Jerry Sandusky scandal and her husband's subsequent death, appearing on Katie Couric's daytime talk show in an episode scheduled to air Monday.
Sue Paterno, who was married to the legendary Penn State football coach for 50 years, is scheduled to talk with Couric in studio for the nationally syndicated show "Katie." The two have already gotten together at Paterno's home in State College, Pa.
Joe Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions for almost as long as he was married, from 1966 into 2011. He led the team to two national titles and 409 victories, which was a major-college record until 111 of those wins were voided by the NCAA as part of the fallout from the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.
Paterno was fired by the school in the days after the scandal broke in late 2011. He died from lung cancer in January 2012. His on-campus statue was removed last July, days after he and three other former school officials were accused by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who headed the school's investigation into the scandal, of covering up allegations against Sandusky.
Many Penn State faithful, including members of Paterno's family, feel that the former coach's role in the scandal has been overblown.
Sue Paterno's chat will be Couric's second big sports-related interview in recent weeks. Late last month, she talked with former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in his first comments since revealing that his supposed late girlfriend actually never existed.

Then I'd say that Paterno's objections weren't forceful enough, wouldn't you? We're talking legendary Coach/CEO Paterno, not some unknown.
He was more powerful and just as negligent as the aforementioned.
It appears that you forgot to read this part: "and Paterno's immediate superior"
Read it and let it sink in.

Special investigator Louis Freeh came down hard on Penn State officials -- including Joe Paterno -- in his 267-page report of the university's handling of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

A special investigator today condemned Penn State University leadership for what he called "the total disregard for the safety and welfare" of children who were sexually abused by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
"The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized," investigator Louis Freeh said in remarks prepared for a 10 a.m. news conference.
In his 267-page report, he named names.
"Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University -- President Graham B. Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance Gary C. Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and Head Football Coach Joseph V. Paterno -- failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade," according to the report. "These men concealed Sandusky's activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities. They exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky's victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not attempting to determine the identity of the child who Sandusky assaulted in the Lasch Building in 2001.
Oh Please!!! It says that his influence in things other than the football program was limited -- even and especially regarding a retirement agreement between a tenured professor and the Board of Trustees.
If Paterno was so all powerful at PSU then how come they granted terms of this agreement over his wishes -- no matter how they were expressed???
If he was so powerful, how did he get fired?
Maybe you should look at the people that fired him - the b.o.t. - who had far more contact w/ the second mile than Joe Paterno ever did.
You don’t know what MM told Joe onedoug. According to Franco - who asked MM point blank what he told Joe - he said he told Joe basically nothing.
Why aren’t these trials proceeding? I’ll give a good guess - there ain’t no there, there.
MM saw horseplay, reported horseplay, and years later changed his tune once the AG’s office cornered him.
Joe in an 84 year old’s way trying to help is coached into using words he never used in his life - like “sexual” and “fondling”.

I've never had an "immediate supervisor" who could tell me that I had to let a child rapist continue his activities.
I never had a job that meant that much to me and I never will.
Joe did. Let that sink in a while.
Because as the PSU figurehead, he turned out to be a disgrace. Are you really so blind?

There are no excuses for the reprehensible conduct of the most powerful people at PSU. Why do you defend them?
It will be interesting to hear what Sue has to say. The haters don’t understand that she is maybe as beloved as Joe was.

That leads me to believe it is Kelly and the Lettermen. Gonna be an interesting month.
How is it reprehensible to meet with a graduate assistant reporting an incident he claims to have witnessed one day and then meet with your immediate superior and pass that to him a day later.
What's reprehensible are Monday morning quarterbacks who can't get their facts straight.
I don't need to take a test to distinguish between moral/immoral, lawful/criminal, good/bad or virtuous/evil. Do you?
I do think you all are missing a great deal concerning Joe's responsibility in this. Compare this to say, Benghazi. You appear to be taking the side of "what does it matter?". Compare it to any really heavy personal knowledge of a horrible crime, you don't just hand it off, wash your hands and never say anything again just to go about your business. Were those Germans that knew about the holocaust innocent? Are the journalists that won't cover the crimes of this administration innocent?
It's really hard to swallow a cry of genuine innocence on Joe Paterno's part. The best thing you can say is he failed to do what he should have done at a critical time in his life. To say all he should have ever done is hand it off and wash his hands is to ignore the virtues of courage, fortitude, and honesty we all commend in a hero when they do the right thing under duress. There are a lot worse scenarios that you can surmise from Joe's failings, and you seem incapable of seeing the possibility that he failed in any way. That's simply inconceivable.
Throwing out senseless strawman BS does nothing but show your desperation. Paterno WAS Penn State, he screwed up royally. He paid the price for being negligent. God and the victims of his negligence will have to forgive him.
