auto tip at Applebee’s? I’ll not be doing that place any more.
I’ve had to make my living in the F and B industry at two points in my life, and all auto tips will do is guarantee medicrity will overtake this niche. Being a bar tender, waiter or waitress is a great entrepreneurial training job.
And if 10% is good enough for G-D, it’s good enough for the gov’t!
Just wait till the COGIC convention comes back to St Louis. They’ll be coming in groups of 20 and leaving no tip after taking up two hours of time
Sorry; no matter how painful; it is not the waitresses job to take onGiven her response; it does make me wonder; if her attitude 'betrayed' her; when serving this 'party'; and so perhaps; a full tip; less than earned.
Whatever the case - and do not like 'cheap tippers' - but it is her job to 'serve'. Not judge. . .then embarrass and make a bad joke of; a customer. It is her 'employer' she is repping; not herself.
Bottom line; she deserved to be fired. These kids growing up with 'realty tv' mind. . .and 'exposure' the name of the game.
How did the waitress harm the reputation of the “pastor” by exposing the truth? The “pastor” is admitting to having had an undeserved reputation.
'Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries of St Louis , Pastor Alois Bell'
Sheer lack of class on both of their parts.
Auto-tip is not a tip by definition
and I never go to places that expect tips
Here’s another thread about this:

The Yahoo article is not as complete as that one. In it, it states that the auto-tip was based on a party of 20, and a party of 8 or more, the gratuity of 18% is automatically added in by the restaurant.
Also, check out the Smoking Gun:

The “pastor” has a very small following thus far, only 15 in her church.
“Auto-tip” has been a restaurant policy for decades. There is usually a citation on the menu. It wouldn’t be there if parties of 8 or more (typically) didn’t tend to flake out on the tip.
That said, it is wrong not to tell the customer you’ve added a tip, thereby getting “double sugar”. It’s been a long time since I waited tables, but the last few large parties I’ve been a part of were NOT told a gratuity had been added.
It’s pretty well-known in the bar/restaurant industry that blacks are bad tippers and often won’t tip at all if the server is white.
Servers mutter curses under their breath when they see a black family seated in their section knowing they are going to get little or nothing for their effort. This, in turn, causes servers who know what’s coming to provide poorer service which the blacks then perceive as racism when, in reality, their reputation is what brought out the bad service.
So it becomes a vicious circle - blacks tip poorly so they get treated poorly so they claim racism which only leads to more bad tips and more poor service. One place I frequented tried to remedy this by having black waitresses serve the black tables but the black waitresses got fed up with the crummy tips as well and quit.
So what does an establishment do? They can’t have a “no blacks” policy because that would bring out the Jesse Jacksons and they can’t lecture the blacks on the proper way to tip or get the r-word thrown back at them. It’s a no-win situation just as stores in bad neighborhoods often find out as well.
In my experience, black people are often complainera and lousy tippers. One night, in the big dining room, we had a large party where they all had dinner plates and desserts. The cheapskates left 75 cents for two of us waitresses. For over 20 years I have done medical transcription for a living. At least I don't have to deal with lousy tippers! But some of the dictators are real slobs and make chewing, smacking, slurping, and shlomping noises while dictating. I curse them while working on their reports.
FYI, the waitress who posted this receipt and was subsequently fired was not the person that waited the table. A male co-worker of hers waited the table and showed her the receipt after the party had left. Also, the pastor, after catching flak from the online posting, apparently called up the Applebee’s demanding everyone involved in the transaction be fired, including the manager.
she was fired for posting a customers receipt showing their full and legible name, making them a public target
as she should have been
she’s an idiot
if she wanted to be “humorous” she could have posted the bill with the name obscured
Surprised all the animosity towards the server....
Ima betting that Alois Bell is Black...and it is no secret Blacks are poor tippers....especially towards whites. That is fact
This lady should not have been fired....but too many Business Socialist type of companies like Applebees will fire a white person to appease a black
There is a lot of debate here about tipping, but not about should the receipt have been posted on a public site. From the business owner point of view it is not good for business to have it’s employees make fun of the customers publicly, even if all the facts are true. I took time to read the story before posting (this time) and the customer signature was clearly displayed in the post so that she could identified. The waitress that posted it was not the waitress that severed the table but a co-worker. This more of a social media problem where you can post something with your phone before you think about it.
I can understand both sides in the story. I don’t like auto tips. And I know how cheap people can be.
Cheapskates, like a few above and the customer in the story, have their, oh so original, ideer that businesses ought to pay waitresses and valet parking attendants sufficient wages so that they would not have to rely on tips. As I said, how original! Take it to the United Nations, because in the United States tipping is an established custom, and a good citizen in any society observes established customs, and doesn’t excuse his petty self interest and greed by pretending to be a revolutionary rebel when disregarding such minor in the end customs. Contemptible, is the word I have for those who stiff waitresses and other low wage employees. Not only do you stiff them, you rob them of the earnings they might have received if a decent human being sat at their table. Stay home and plot your revolutionary plans of tipping free society!
