An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. "I thought the note was insulting, but also comical," she told Consumerist.com. "And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

The tips have to be split between waitress/bus boy/bartender in these places so 18% is not unreasonable.

A year or two ago at Texas Roadhouse we had a group of young blacks sitting near us. They had over a $100 bill. After they left the waiter told us that we had tipped more for our under $40 meal then they did for over $100 meal.

Thankfully, I only know a couple people just like him; they’re friendless, angry, narcissists, and self important. He thinks he impresses people around him and looks down on others and likely has little self-awareness or awareness others - or of what they think of him. He needs your prayers, I’m certain.
A friend’s brother in Memphis REFUSED to work on COGIC conventions. He said they were the most awful people you could imagine.

No, people who DON’T tip or are cheap tippers are the idiots. I used to wait tables in college & I tip very well. I feel so sorry for any waiter who has to wait on your cheap table! I think a great judge of character is how someone treats service people. It tells you everything you need to know about that person.

I waitressed for $.80 and hour and was expected to make the rest of my pay by tips. I could make at least the minimum wage, or more if I worked harder.
Betting your lumber yard paid you more than half the minimum wage.
The harder, more efficiently, courteously and pleasantly I worked, the more I could earn, and the better you enjoyed good service with your meal
If you really want to see how fully paid untipped waitstaff works, try eating in a restaurant where the waiters are govt employees who get their paycheck no matter when and how they deliver your food. Communist countries used to be infamous for this
better yet, if you do not want to support workers in this profession who are partly paid as if they were independent contractors- teaching them valuable customer service skills - just pack a sammich and eat in a park. OR order pizza ... oops guess you don't tip the pizza driver, either

when i worked at my latest restaurant gig, the few black servers we had did NOT want to wait on them either.

You have obviously never worked in a restaurant. I think everyone should be required to work in a restaurant and they would find out what it’s like to be on the other end.

Not leaving a tip means you didn’t like the service. Never leaving a tip means you’re a deadbeat, plain and simple. Working as wait staff isn’t just serving you, its serving a multitude of people all at once while making each one feel ypu’re giving them personal attention, helping anyone and everyone of the restaurant staff who needs help or is falling behind, washing dishes or pitching in at the grill if that’s what it takes, and helping to clean the whole place down late at night. You go home, stinking, literally, from sweat and food and grease odors, like rolling around in a deep fryer sfter football practice, every day. And people who leave nothing or a penny on a table like it’s a joke, after an exhausted waitress makes herself look unexhausted and pleased as punch to see you and make you feel special, is ignorant of the job.
When I was young I cooked at a family owned bar and grill that left it totally up to the waitresses who they would and would not serve, and if a customer was a known deadbeat, they wouldn’t even acknowledge their existence. Some would raise a big row and insist to be served, and I would be called to drag them out by the belt and collar and dump their butt on the sidewalk. Some really thought it was their constitutional right to force someone to serve them, essentially for nothing. Ignoring them, the waitress was still working for the restaurant, she just wasn’t working for the non-tipping customer. Tips pay for service, and if they don’t tip, they shouldn’t be served.
But providing a floor show while they were dragged out by the heels evens the bill ;^)
I’m betting that if all restaurants did what you are suggesting, the price of your meals would rise, too. The restaurants would cover their increased costs to the servers by adding it in to your bill.

This lady should not have been fired....but too many Business Socialist type of companies like Applebees will fire a white person to appease a black
You are justifying your cheapness and the bad service you probably receive if you regularly visit any restaurants that are better than fast food. The waiter/waitress who receives a tip also has to share part of that tip with the hostess, the cooks and the bussers.
I, too, would rather let the servers receive a fairer wage but to mandate this would also drive up the cost of your meal. Would you like your meals to be 30-40% more expensive just so you won't have to feel robbed by tipping?
I enjoy tipping and my regular spots all have young, pretty waitresses who love watching me walk through the door and welcome me with a big hug because they know I will be kind to them and tip generously. Many of my favorite servers comp my non-alcoholic beverages for me because they know I will still tip them more than the cost of the drink.
But if you wish, you can continue to be served by sour faces who know their work at your table will be unrewarded and you should not then complain if you don't receive the sort of attention I receive when I eat out.

I was a bus boy back in HS at our local Sizzler and that actually happened back then, and still goes on today. Saw it for myself. It is what it is.
