I got me this here Mossberg 590a1 shotgun. Pretty cool shotgun, I already had a 500 so I figured having two with the same parts was wise. Then I took it out and put several typs of ammo through it and ran into something weird.
I think you need to get the terminology correct. Hulls get extracted from the chamber and ejected from the receiver
Is the hull being left in the chamber of the barrel. Or is the hull being partly extracted from the chamber but not being ejected from the receiver.
Then is the next round not coming out of the magazine onto the shell lifter so it can be placed into the barrel.
It sounds to me your get partial extraction and no ejection induce by the extra recoil of the 3 inch mag ammo. This is most likely caused by not holding onto the forend firmly.
Then because the side isn't being pull sharply all the way to the rear it dosen,t' have a chance to trip the shell latchs and allow the next round to leave the magazine.
so when you close the action and bring the forend back you are allowing the action to trip the shell latch's allowing the next shell to come out of the magazine.
Man, there is an epidemic of people losing firearms in bizarre boating accidents.
I say we outlaw fishing boats. Do more firearms have to suffer, Mr. President. End this gun violence now!

This. I was pretty timid about the recoil. You describe the symptoms in spite of my difficulty with terminlogy. The empty was still in the receiver. The next round was still in the magazine.
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican squirrel
She was petite, with a dancer’s swift feet,
I loved her red hair and I gave her a whirl
Blacker than night were the eyes of Sciuridae,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell,
I loved her & wanted her, but I was damned hungry
Grabbed the Mossberg 500 and blew her to hell.
Are the shells commercially manufactured ? If the brass is not properly sizedIs the brass high or low on the 3" ?
they will jam in the chamber.
No, all commercial. Federals, high brass.
Honestly, I think RiverRunner hit it. I may have to try again before I ship her off.
Gawd, I hate squirrels. My motto is “exterminate the species.”
I mean, if I want another tree in my yard I’ll dig a hole and buy one in balled burlap.
MEC Shotshell Checker for brass diameter.
I’ve seen full choke barrels that handled slugs just fine. There is no safety factor involved in shooting slugs in any modern barrel you have if the chamber length is correct.
After the shot before you take it off your shoulder sharply work the side rear ward they are made to be worked sharply and hard you will not hurt it see what happens.
A good pump gunner does not remove the shotgun from his shoulder between shots.
I'll never go hunting with you. You will never shoot on my range.
Fired thousands of rounds of slugs and buck. Hundreds of thousands rounds of bird shot. I am familiar with cleaning them. You should do some research on slugs you will find the the OD of a slug is smaller then the ID of the tightest choke.
There is no problem in fireing slugs in full toCly choke barrels.
Sure a improper sized jag or cleaning patch might not fit through a tight full choke but fit through a cly choke with out trouble. But that has nothing to do with shooting slugs.

I respectfully dissagree with you on the use of slugs and choked barrels.

WELD the threads of the choke to the gun.
I will have to say that Riverrunner knows his pump shotguns but in this case I think he is wrong. I think the gun is defective.
I taught skeet at Southern Mississippi for two years. The guns we had for the students were 870 Remington. I did get a few students short shucking the action and that could possibly be what you did.
Still I don’t see why you would short shuck it with the 3 inch shell and not the others.
It does seem like a short shuck could indeed cause what you had happen.
Go to www.shotgunworld.com and their forum. They have a forum for Mossbergs and a member there is a 930 expert.
What about fixed choke barrels.
I really dought one well ever get a shot gun barrel hot enough to weld any thing.
Are you saying that on a barrel that has screw in chokes if one used too tight of choke tubes like a extra full turkey choke. One might damage the treads It could be possible.
Because he is afraid of the recoil.
Yeah I can see that happening. It would explain the shell back in the chamber. It could also explain the other shells remaining in the mag as he did’t move the action far enough to trip the shell release. If it moved a bit further it would explain a shell lying on the lifter.
If I had a Mossberg here I would move the action just enough to trip the lifter or maybe just the shell retainer. Then I would look to see how far the empty had come from the barrel. If it was still well in there, I would say a short shuck was probably the problem. If the empty shell was kicked out by the ejector before the shell release which is how I think it would work, then I don’t think short shifting would be the cause.
Just to be clear, these are NOT screw in chokes. It is the ID of the bbl muzzle.
IMO, Mossberg would not let a gun out the door that would be unsafe. I believe they are shot at the factory. I don't know about Mossberg, but many guns are fired with heavier than legal loads to make sure they are safe.
