I bet that if we wanted to, we could come up with appropriate public punishments for those who commit these sorts of crimes that would be payment for the crime and would instill absolute fear of having to endure it.

It shouldn't be islamic or sharia like where stuff is chopped off, but should be sufficiently traumatizing to instill real fear and cause real pain, but not damage those who would administer it.
