This is the reason I support open carry laws.

I have no desire to carry openly in public but also think a person who is carrying a concealed weapon should not have to worry about accidentally exposing his weapon.

Where is the guy's boss, does he support his deputy? Is it going to be his department's policy too?

The threat is a reckless endangerment to the public, to himself, and his colleague.

Everyone involved acted stupidly. The holder should have informed the cop he was carrying, and the cop should have not snapped like he did. Not sure when this happened, but I’m betting we will see more like this as lawful 2A supporters get painted as “dangerous”.

Story previously posted on Free Republic about the recently passed Florida law that covers incidents of accidental exposure of concealed weapon. This guy should not have had a problem.

What else is a Florida Deputy who is also an Obama voter to do in this case?

The Prosecutor in the end dropped all charges.

Major overreaction by the policeman. The citizen kept his cool and his voice under control the entire time. Excellent behavior on his part.

Sounded almost like "Roid Rage" from the LEO. And yes, it was almost all on video. The man was trying to comply with the officer's requests and his holster accidentally showed. The only debate should be required notification of carry, but the reaction was in excess. After having asked the man to place his hands on the van, no need existed for the comment about shooting the man in the back and the use of an expletive in the process -- very unprofessional.

Something else is attached to this story that we are not being told for the officer to act like that. Perhaps a personal conflict between the two men's families or something like that had been going on. The LEOs with whom I attend church would never have treated that man that way even when placing him under control.

Was this resolved in court and what was the outcome?

Thank you, Indiana, for having a Carry license, not a conceal carry license.

Okay to open carry in Indiana. VERY rarely see anyone carrying openly. Probably have not seen anyone open carrying in the last year. So carry permit holders are not show-offs.

Before we can be secure in our freedom we have to take a careful look at the police. Seems like we sure have a rash of rogue cops.

The sheriff was an ass...he needs retraining on dealing with the public and carry conceal laws...

There is a new law for dealing with An accidental exposure...

In Florida you do not have to inform an officer if you are carrying....when pulled over....

Though I would hand him my carry permit with my license as a courtesy...

Fl Stat § 790.053 Open carrying of weapons.—

(1) Except as otherwise provided by law and in subsection

(2), it is unlawful for any person to openly carry on or about his or her person any firearm or electric weapon or device. It is not a violation of this section for a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm as provided in s. 790.06(1), and who is lawfully carrying a firearm in a concealed manner, to briefly and openly display the firearm to the ordinary sight of another person, unless the firearm is intentionally displayed in an angry or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense.

I am originally from Florida, and it’s now my 2nd home where my family lives. I live in a state to the north and have a CCW permit that is valid and recognized in Florida.

Once, when showing my brother a new pistol I brought with me, pulling it from the trunk of my car - he quickly shoved me to conceal the pistol or I could get arrested. My state is an open carry state. I was shocked. He explained that open display of a pistol in Florida is against the law.

Crazy.

The first words out of the officers mouth should have been “Do you have a weapon?”. It all escalated from his not asking.

Step One if you get pulled over and have a firearm in the vehicle — Inform the officer, permit or not. In NC it is state law. Don’t know about other states, but it is polite nonetheless, and avoids any misunderstanding.

I don’t get pulled over often, but the last time I did, by a NC State Trooper, I put my hands out the window as he approached the vehicle and said, “Officer, I have a firearm in the vehicle.” It was being legally carried in plain sight on the passenger seat of the vehicle.

We spent the next 10 minutes talking about firearms, shooting the breeze. Nice guy. No ticket.
