The 36-year Senate veteran is trounced by Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, whose business and Tea Party backers spent $2.7 million to defeat a once-powerful pol they portrayed as out of touch.
That cracking, thudding sound emanating from Indiana on primary night Tuesday was the crumbling of a Washington institution, punctuated by muffled shrieks of terror from incumbent office-holders everywhere.
Republican Sen. Richard Lugara towering figure in the national-security, arms-control, and foreign-policy realms who six years ago was so popular in his home state that local Democrats didnt bother to field an opponentlost his bid for a seventh term to a lesser-known, more modestly financed challenger who successfully portrayed the 80-year-old incumbent as out of touch and not conservative enough.

Glad Lugar is out. Lots to be learned about GOP from that episode.
Yeah, like, for instance, don’t replace someone who’s mostly conservative with someone who is stupid.
For other examples, see Sharon Angle, Todd Akin, and Christine O’Donnell.
“Yeah, like, for instance, dont replace someone whos mostly conservative with someone who is stupid.”
Lugar is a dangerous man.
Yep. It’s like, “How To Lose An Election in Three Easy Steps”.
From what I’m seeing, voting for Obama’s AWB is a career ender. Liberals are talking about this poll and that poll that shows this and that and playing their usual propaganda games. The only polls House republicans should be worrying about are the ones taken in their districts. They should also remember that it isn’t the moderates that determine their fate and that the people that do determine their fate are in no mood for reaching across the aisle.
“mostly conservative”
Did you bump your head before you wrote that?

Yes of course, let’s continue to support RINOs like Lugar who will abandon us in the clutch, just as long as they go along to get along most of the time. = wink = wink =
Maybe if the hot water were made suddenly hotter, the frogs will notice in time.
Certainly better than letting the water warm up slowly with RINOs like Lugar.
There are plenty of so called “conservative” FReepers who happily worked in concert with the media and RINOs to destroy anyone who stood in their way.
On the bright side, they were so busy with a few that many more tea partiers won.
Boy that was a good day!!
I might have agreed with you a few months ago. Now? not so much. The only way to make some men hold the line is to put a machine gun behind them.
It ain't the conservative message that is the problem. It is the messenger. We have to find a better way to screen out the stupid.
All three of these people were better than the people they defeated......and all three were back stabbed by the rhino party leaders!!!
Wrong. Completely wrong. mourdock was elected statwide as treasurer and was a fine choice. He made a ridiculous mistake, and one that is inexplicable after the Akin comments in MO. Otherwise, he was fine.
You single out a few candidates in your comments, but leave out the slew of ‘RNC preferred’ candidates that fell on their face. You didn’t mention Tommy Thompson, Connie Mack, or George Allen who were all the ‘safe’ choice. All ran terrible, uninspiring, losing campaigns. You seem to cherry pick few upstart candidates among hundreds in the country.
You win some and you lose some, and your attacks afterwards are not helpful.
We need intelligent, strong conservative candidates, not morons.
I think John Bohner should be target #1 this election cycle
With TEA party marches on his office and GOP headquarters
So you admire the Soviet model...
