Robert Griffin III has partial tears of ACL and LCL, MRI suggests
The Washington Post ^ | January 7, 2013 | Mark Maske and Mike Jones

The MRI exam of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s right knee suggested that Griffin has suffered partial tears of his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, according to several people with knowledge of the test results.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.

It was not immediately clear whether surgery would be required or how long Griffin would be sidelined if the partial ligament tears are determined to be fresh injuries. Griffin suffered a torn ACL in the same knee in 2009 while he was in college at Baylor, and has been playing in recent weeks with a mild sprain of the LCL.

One person with knowledge of the situation said Griffin might have to undergo exploratory surgery to determine the extent of the damage and whether the injuries are new. Another said Griffin hopes to avoid full-blown reconstructive surgery if the tears are partial, even if they are new injuries.

A third person familiar with the case, asked whether the ligament damage is new or a matter of previous injuries showing up on Griffin’s MRI, said: “That’s what we’re trying to find out.”It was not immediately clear whether surgery would be required or how long Griffin would be sidelined if the partial ligament tears are determined to be fresh injuries. Many will blame the coach, team doctor and RG 3 himself.

Partial blame also goes to the NFL and the groundskeeper. That field was attrocious.

Seattle came out with some knee and ankle dings too.

It the Redskins continue to run this type of offense with RG3,
he will have a short NFL career.

They need some receivers, but they do have a good running back.

Can't blame the Doc. RGIII wouldn't let him look at it during the game.

I saw the initial injury and I blame RGIII. He exposes his body to hits way too often and should have given himself up before that hit. I understand this point has been made to him many times. If he doesn't cool it, he'll have a very short career.

Why do you say that? What was wrong? Were you there?
Were there pre-game questions about even playing the game because of the field's condition?

Concerns about the field were raised last year when Adrian Peterson blew out his ACL on it. Before the game the announcers said this and mentioned that if it were not for paint the field would have been the color of dirt. No excuse for a NFL team to have to endure that type of field.

I'm a Giants fan and I knew early on RGIII was going to be trouble for the Giants ... like Michael Vick. I was right.
But I also knew that like Vick, he wouldn't remain trouble for very long. Right again.
His career may not be over, but neither he nor his career will ever be the same.

My wife and I thought there was something strange about the field. It looked like it wasn’t attached to the soil or something. Pieces were flying off with each player’s step.

Saw the game on TV. I have some “experience”.

Played on many fields like that (all sand or less) in junior high and high school (late 60’s) so FedEx was all too reminiscsant.

But the difference between what I saw yesterday (affecting both teams) was - I was a 16 year old kid and did not have my career and livelihood dependant on such a POS field.

Sad to say, that video can be added to the Redskin's Hall of Lame along with Joe Theisman's leg break against the Giants.

Yeah, Adrian Peterson’s career is over, after he had the same injury last year.

"Can't blame the Doc. RGIII wouldn't let him look at it during the game."

But wasn't that the doctor or trainer that took RG III into that little shed on the sidelines? What goes on in there?

Tough thing to watch. Football tears a body up. I still have an angry hip from HS football.

Robert is a superb athlete and is a fine young man. Likely will recover, but he won’t ever be what he was.

Here’s long bet. Will RGIII or Kirk Cousins have the best career? Think I’d have to bet on Cousins right now. Running QB’s get broken in the NFL.
