I never had any problems in the short time I lived in the Deep South. My co-workers in Savannah, Ga., told me at times that I was nice for a Yankee, which is to say that thanks to Southern hospitality, I was very politely well-tolerated. Still, there were times I felt as if I needed a passport. I also had never seen an entire aisle at the grocery store dedicated to grits, the way they had it at the Piggly Wiggly. And while that life was a while ago, it was enough to give a sense of some of the bigger things at play Monday night in the Notre Dame-Alabama national championship game. This is a rivalry of the two greatest college football histories. But its also especially to the people of the South, I suspect between two symbols. This will be part football game, part culture conflict. It will be as if the line of scrimmage is the Mason-Dixon Line. Alabama football is a way of life. And it also is the seat of football in the South. Its a cultural icon. Notre Dame is the nations team. Or, at least, the unions. Those lines still mean something in the South. Strangely, there are still some hurt feelings about the Civil War, which, as I was politely informed while living there, is never to be called that, but instead the War Between the States, the War For Southern Independence or the War of Northern Aggression. Kirk McNair, who has written two books on Alabama football, including What It Means To Be Crimson Tide, is in Florida, where hell see his 34th consecutive Alabama bowl game.

Northern Snobbery PING! ROLL TIDE!
This game should be between Bama and Oregon.
The co-eds at Alabama are much better looking than the ND women.
1. The madness of college athletic team loyalty is widespread across the nation, especially football and basketball.
2. The worst=loudest/most obnoxious fans (and this especially applies to ND and UA) are those who never attended the school or had family who attended the school.
3. It boils down to the basic psychology of people wanting to associate with/be identified as a winner, especially if their own lives have not worked out so well.
4. Sports marketing at every level has refined the old Roman principle of "bread and circuses" to district the great unwashed masses from their problems.
5. Much is made about Roman Catholic allegiance to ND. The UA football coach, Nick Saban, is a devout Roman Catholic.
6. The majority of elite college football teams are comprised of >70% black athletes while black male enrollments at these schools are generally <4%.
7. The football programs at AU, UGA, UF, FSU, and others are plagued with bad behavior by thug athletes.
8. Major academic scandals involving black athletes continue to be revealed, e.g., UNC-Chapel Hill.
I learned at an early age in life to become an "ABB" = "anybody but (the University of Ala-)fan principally because of the bad behavior I observed exhibited by UA fans. I look at how the Roman Catholic administration at ND has embraced BHO and homosexual rights. Net result - I don't have a dog in this BCS fight. If the game were to be played on SAT, and UA lost, church attendence across the state of AL the next morning would be very skimpy.
Most of the time, I’ll take a Northern school over a Western one, a Southern school over a Northern one, a Texas school over a Southern one ... and anybody over LSU, OU or USC.
For today, Roll Tide. Otherwise, Hook ‘em.

“Notre Dame football graduates 97% of it’s players.
Alabama football graduates 72%.”
That’s excellant for both schools. But when you compare to overall graduation rates:
ND 90%
Uof A 65%
So compared to the school average Alabama is +7 for FB players while ND is -7.
Amen to that!
ROLL TIDE!
And where do many of Alabama’s star players come from, Alabama?
“Some of the nicest, most polite people Ive ever met were in Savannah, GA.”
Why Yes, Yes we are!
LOL. You are a trouble maker. ;~))

And way easier.
Somebody had to say it.
Like Billy Joel said - Catholic girls start much too late.
And I’m just kidding, folks. Went to school in central Ohio.
I think that is a +7 for both...
a whole aisle of grits is such bullshit
only a few brands at that
but screw white grits...they must be yeller
anyhow the biggest differences tween us and Yankees
in order
1) we are more polite and open to conversation and familiarity...no question of that..being rude and demanding down here can get you shunned or hurt
2) our women are better looking..or at least they try harder and at older ages and they like being women...rare is a Deep South gal openly pushy on her man either...hear me roar is poorly thought of here...it’s more like hear me purr and pay attention or I will scratch you
3) we know guns better...no question on that...and we distrust the state more so
4) we are more patriotic...ironic isn’t it?..we pine for the Old America with dignity and the culture that kept families together
5) our food is better...especially the Coast and Louisiana or Texas BBQ...our music is better too..at least roots wise
6) we have more black folks ...5-20 times more as a percentage than do non Southern states that like to lecture us on how to deal with it...Mississippi is almost 40 percent and has towns and counties that are 80-90% black...try lecturing a white property owner living in that situation about all yer high and mighty race is just a social construct bullcrap
People are fat everywhere...and there are trailers everywhere too. I was just in Michigan and saw trailers and plastic homes and fat folks same as Tennessee...and lastly:
7)...we have more churches and attend more regular...no doubt...man..Michigan had maybe 20 percent the churches we have..at least the area at the top of the ring finger
“I think that is a +7 for both...”
oops
The American Indians introduced corn and grits to the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. The Pilgrims could have starved without the grits.
Plymouth Rock is in Massachuetts.
Grits became essential in the South after it was defeated, burned and plundered by the Yankee troops in the War Between The States.
-Roll Tide-
Here’s a “swamp Yankee” (my Canuck father used to called me that) that’s rooting for my beloved Tide in Massachussets. Roll Tide!
Alabama by 17 points......:o)
Great read WD ! Dead on accurate as usual.
Merry New Year Sir !
Stay safe !
It's surprising. I guess more people hate Notre Dame than bother to hate Alabama. So even those Northern heavily-Catholic states back Alabama. Either that, or ESPN viewer/respondents are just strange.
I see Brisette decided to transfer....good riddance.
