History of chicks at this nest:
2011/12 = 1 chick, 2010/11 = 1 chick, 2009/10 = 1 chick, 2008/09 = 2 chicks
The eagles have had their names ever since they moved onto the property in 2007/08; Ozzie and Harriet
The nest resides 60 feet above the ground, in a Slash Pine tree. The camera faces South East.
Nesting season begins here in South FL Oct. 1. The eagles stay until late April or May.
These bald eagles have been coming to this nest for the past 5 years. They reside in this nest between the months of October and April. Before building this nest in 2006/07, the pair had a nest on the opposite side of Bayshore Road. This location is now known as Eagle Landing. This mature, mating pair continue to make Southwest Florida their winter home.
This year, DPRE is excited to have a live look into their Southwest Florida nest. We have installed a camera that will film the birds 24/7 and stream live video directly to this site. The camera is positioned 6 feet above the nest. It is attached to a tree limb using no screws or nails in order to preserve the tree. The camera's night vision is an infrared light which emits no actual light. Nor does it make any noise. The birds do not see or hear anything coming from the camera.
The objective of this camera is to bring these beautiful birds into our homes. The goal of DPRE is to foster appreciation, admiration and respect for these magnificent creatures. Our intentions are to learn from these birds so we may better understand them and their habits.
This nest is labeled LEO26B of the Florida State Monitoring Program. It has been monitored for 5 years. The first year was when the nest was across the street in 2007. The pair relocated the nest in 2006/07 to its present location. There are 133 nests in a 25 mile radius. Closet nest is one mile.
An alternate source for viewing is the original Ustream feed here:
http://www.ustream.tv/SouthwestFloridaEagleCam
Both feeds are identical but this one contains chat boards which are informative and provide up-to-date status as to the movement of the adults and the progress of their two eggs/chicks.
At the time of this posting, one egg has fully hatched and the chick can be seen wiggling about.. I believe the other egg has not fully hatched yet.
Fascinating to watch these American Bald Eagles! Prayers for their success!
I love watching over forty of them soar in the air near my workplace.
I time my smoke breaks to see them.
It looks like Mom or Dad has two fish to feed them when they wake up.
Well shoot! It looks like we just missed seeing the second egg hatch! It just hatched a short time ago.
There’s another eagles nest cam in Iowa that I watched last year. By the time these young ‘uns fledge, things should be cranking up at the Iowa nest. http://sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Decorah_Bald_Eagle_Nest.html
The cam is apparently running now because I could hear the highway sounds, but it’s dark. Once the eagles come back, they’ll have it lit up at night, like the FL cam.
Just a little something more to watch and enjoy this upcoming year. :-)
I have to wonder too, if the fish by the wayside also serve to divert the bugs in the nest away from the eagle and eaglets.. I’ve actually seen a bug or two stray from the birds and towards the fish. Vewwy cwever eegulls..
Kool!
Congrats to Florida on their eagle population!
Washington state almost lost one of their finest when that dumb cluck landed in the road chasing road kill only about 100 feet in front of me. He barely got airborne by the time I got to the spot...
Both eaglets are hatched now.. Neat stuff!
Can I ask what part of Florida you live?
I am just west of Port St Lucie and there are about 5 pair I constantly see from here to Okeechobee to Indiantown area.
Always WAY cool.
Awesome and addictive!
