Swedish toddlers could be protected from urinary tract infections if their parents took a leaf out of Vietnam's potty training book and cut short the use of nappies, a Swedish research study infers.
Professor Anna-Lena Hellström at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg has previously studied the link between diapers and UTIs, more specifically how children who cannot completely empty their bladder run a higher risk of infection.
She has now turned her attention to potty training in Vietnam where toddlers as young as three months go diaper-free.
"Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine you could start that young," Hellström told Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.
Hellström said she was not issuing any official recommendations to Swedish parents, but said they had the right to know that it is possible to start potty-training earlier.
Her two-year study of 47 children showed that Vietnamese parents use whistling to help their children go to the toilet.
"And once they are on the potty, the child will completely empty their bladder instead of weeing a bit now and then, which children with diapers tend to do," Hellström told DN.
One of my four was like that. It was time for nursery school, and I explained to him that the diapers had to go. He was very verbal, and said “NO”!
I said “YES”, and “RIGHT NOW”.
The little pisser held his pee from very early in the morning until about 5 in the afternoon, and begged me to put on his “Pampers”, so he could go pee.
I said “NO”. “Toilet from now on, Buddy”. Much wailing, kicking, etc. After about 45 minutes, he realized I meant business, peed in the toilet and never asked for his “Pampers” (appropriately named) again.
He turned out to be an outstanding man, by the way, now 45 years old. I am very proud of him.
3 months is not toddlers
You aren’t a toddler until you can toddle.
I saw toddlers (real ones) in Nepal go diaperless and pantless and it was cold out. Made a mess everywhere they went.
Tax-chicks opinion will rule since she has had way more than me. That being said, a potty trained 3 month old? BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
My mother raised 12 with 2 sets of twins and didn’t want a bunch of us in diapers at the same time. She said that I was potty trained at 9 months and that it was simple. Every two hours you take the diaper off and sit them on the potty and soon it becomes a habit. It works.
I always wonder why peole would want to wash/buy diapers for 3 years per child. I know for a while there it was considered bad for the ego or something?
hole
heh
I trained son @ 18 mos, daughter @ 14 mos. 2 yrs is too long.
How sweet!
Just so you know, I’m not living at this address any more. I just bop in to see some g-kids. I sorta kinda just handed the keys to this place, and most of my things (like the computer) to another family member, and went away. I would FReepmail you, but I am on double secret probation AGAIN.
And back to the thread. I don’t know, but I’m STILL cleaning up my kidszeduh crap. And they are adults.
lol
They should definitely be off diapers by the time they are off the ObamaCare mandated insurance coverage of 26
Ahh, everyone knows there must be something wrong with me. I can’t seem to kick my kids to the curb. I use the excuse I wasn’t raised that way. Anyways my daughter just got a $160 speeding ticket in the mail from Oregon. Doesn’t have the funds to pay it. I guess I’ll try to figure something out to help. Better yet, I’ll let her mother do it. I’d probably just end up getting yelled at by either or both. AGAIN. (Not that I expect to be saved getting yelled at anyhow) ;-)
And the paddies are fertilized with nightsoil.
Yum.
kids are a weak spot for a lot of people
That’s nothing new, toddlers typically run nekkid any time they can get away with it (not at 3 mos, but...)
