Thirty-seven years ago Barbara Hill was sitting in her Cranford home six months pregnant when she got a call from her grief-stricken father.
Her 57-year-old aunt, Lena Triano, had been found raped, tied up and murdered in the quiet Ripley Place home in Westfield where she lived alone. Hills father, Joseph Triano, had just returned from the house where hed identified his sisters brutalized body.
"He had nightmares for years," Hill said of her now-deceased father. "He hired private detectives. He would have been really gratified to see this day come."
Today, nearly four decades since Trianos death a judge in juvenile court in Elizabeth convicted 52-year-old Carlton Franklin, whose home abutted Trianos in 1976, of her murder.
The case lay dormant for decades until Union County Prosecutors agent Vinnie Byron and Sgt. Harvey Barnwell reopened the file after uncovering DNA evidence on Triano and at the crime scene which would lead to Franklin.
"He got away with murder for 36 years and finally justice prevailed," Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said after the verdict.
Since Franklin was 15-years-old at the time of the murder the state could not waive him up to adult court because juveniles under the age of 18 could not be tried as adults in 1976.
After a five-day trial before Judge Robert Kirsch, Franklin was convicted of felony murder for killing Triano in the act of rape. He faces up to 20 years in prison under 1976 guidelines when he is sentenced on Jan. 31.

How come I didn’t even have to look at the pics to know the race of this monster.......
I guess white people never never murder people. Have you ever heard of John List? He murdered his entire family in this same town 5 years earlier.
What a terrible way for her to leave this world.. Thank God justice is finally served.
Funny, I wouldn’t have jumped to that assumption knowing only his name or the facts presented.
According to statistics, black males rape white women at 8 times the rate of the reverse.
Is that a 1976 statistic?
The rate is probably higher than that now, yes.
I like your idea of a substantive reply. lol
I would guess it is closer to 100 to 1.
The only two instances of White on Black rape I have ever heard of, both turned out to be false accusations.
I don’t give a damn about what the laws were in 1976! This POS raped and murdered a woman and he should be behind bars for the rest of his sorry life.
The rest of his life should be about 30 days in a just world.

Yep. This pond scum should be swinging from a rope or executed in some other fashion.
20 years is not nearly enough. I don’t care that he was 15. I don’t care what sentencing guidelines were in 1976. 36 years makes no difference. He knew what he was doing and should have been tried as an adult. Did people have their heads up their behinds in the 70’s?
One can take their pick of time frames. I reads that the rate was 8-1 some years ago, but is much higher now. Either way, you are free to do the research yourself.

Carlton Franklin (left), now 51 years old, is charged with the 1976 killing of Lena Triano (right). Both are pictured in their high school yearbooks Franklin from 1979 and Triano from 1937.
I know; there was a time...most of my life, actually...I would have said the same thing. Call it “conditioning”.
I have no interest or desire to do the research myself. You are the one who made the racist remark and the follow-up guessed statistical assertion. Just because you want to use unsubstantiated statistics doesn’t mean that I have to accept them or that this man could not have been white. His name gives no clue to his race and nor does the story presented.
1)The article was accompanied by a PICTURE or did you not notice.
2)I COULD send you plenty of links, but here at FR, we believe in doing for oneself.
3)Calling someone a racist for pointing out a fact makes me think you have a projection problem.
