New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan wasnt saying who his starting quarterback would be after Mark Sanchezs ineffectiveness Monday night, but by Tuesday afternoon he was ready for a for a change.
Greg McElroy, the second-year QB out of Alabama, will start Sunday against the San Diego Chargers rather than his other option, Tim Tebow, the guy the Jets traded for in March. The news was first reported by Rich Cimini of ESPN New York and Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Tebow played six snaps in the loss that crushed the Jets playoff hopes Monday night. McElroy has played in one game this season, the Jets 7-6 victory over Arizona on Dec. 2. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown in that game.
Earlier Tuesday, Cimini had tweeted that Ryan was still discussing the decision with the staff, but that it looked like [it'll be] McElroy. However, Tebow [is] still involved in equation. This could be weird.

Free Tebow!
The Jets should bench their coaching staff..........
The Yets should move to L.A. Wait - nevermind, they STINK. Bring back my Rams!!!!!
They aint much better.......
Tebow should go to Canada. The media and crowds here have destroyed him. Damn shame.
Or how about he doesn’t have the skill-set to play quarterback in the NFL?
Go Greg! Not that I don’t like Tim.
Why'd the Jets trade for him, out of pity?
I think it has gone well beyond “skill set” into a real personal disdain and hatred.
And the piling-on continues.
The Jets have been negligent in their treatment of Tebow. No quarterback could have been successful with the way that the Jets have misused him.
So, a heisman winner, a quarterback who led his team into the NFL playoffs in his one and only opportunity and a religious nice-guy.
Did I leave anything out? I have seen quarterbacks with these attributes in the past. Most of them are now in the NFL Hall of Fame.
If people would just allow Tebow to play with the talent that he has, he too will probably end up in the HofF someday.
Jets already know what Tebow can do, they want to see what McElroy can do so they can unload Sanchez. They will release Tebow, and then they will try to trade Sanchez, and eat his salary to get Alex Smith from SF.
I work on Sunday and don’t watch pro games or really follow them much. I’m surprised to read what you’ve written about Tebow and NY fans. What have I missed? Has Tebow not been productive at all?
I think Tebow would be a great backup QB for a team who would use him regularly. He is as much a runner as a passer and would eventually get banged up if he was a starter.
For a short yardage situation he would be a good choice. He could run pass or hand it off. The defense could not simply assume he was going to run every time.
The Broncos are doing quite well without Tim Tebow, thus it would be ridiculous to claim that Tebow led,any team to the playoffs.
The Jets may want to consider having the 69 year old drunken Joe Namath play QB before Tebow.
Why did they pick up Tebow if they don’t want him to play?
The jets are blaming quarterbacks for the deficiencies in their offensive line.
Sanchez and Tebow are top notch quarterbacks that can’t help the problem.
San Francisco would be crazy to let go of Smith, who is probably the best overall QB in the NFL. The jets should concentrate on their real problem.
What else did you dream last night?
You don’t have the ‘skill set’ to post intelligently on FR.
Its amusing. The worst that can be said about TT is he's a young QB, yet look at the silly comments here.
True, they are. A close examination would reveal that the Broncos of today are not close to the team that they were under Tebow.
Of course, they did bring in a future HofF quarterback to replace him.
