Nothing growing up here in Michigan except my Egyptian walking onions. They’ll have green shoots all through the winter. Those of you unfamiliar just google it. They root incredibly deep and stay alive all through the winter. I always have green onions and the older ones get almost as large as leeks. In the summer they form clove heads at the top that can be used for propagation or peeled and used like shallots. They do spread like crazy and have given away many clumps over the years.
Sounds like a good type of onion to have, and very versatile.
Thanks for posting that! I know we had them when I was a kid and couldn’t for the life of me remember what they were. Love those things because they are so versitile.
Mom called them Winter Onions. Got a start last year and they are doing well. They need to be weeded, but I’ve been concerned about disturbing the soil around them....Any ideas?
Thanx for the heads up. I'll have to plant some of those next year :)
