Word For The Day, Thursday, December 6, 2012 – assoil
dictionaries ad nauseam | 6 December 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

assoil \uh-SOIL\, verb
1. To absolve; acquit; pardon.
2. To atone for.

Example sentences:
Come up, wives, offer of your yarn! See, I enter your name here in my roll; you shall enter into heaven's bliss; I assoil you by mine high power, you that will make offerings, as clear and clean as when you were born — (lo sirs, thus I preach).
-- Bennett Cerf, An Anthology of Famous British Stories

"Go, and assoil thy living patient: the dead are past thy cares." — " I go," said the Monk of Montcalm, " and Heaven grant that I may shed around his death-hour, that peace which, I fear me, bloody prelate, will be denied to thine!"
-- Charles Robert Maturin, The Albigenses

Etymology:
Assoil is derived from the same root as the similar word absolve. However, assoil came into English through the Middle French word asoiler rather than directly from Latin like the word absolve.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I have been told I am terrible at pop culture....by our local radio station owner. I had no idea what he was humming and asked. I extolled at amusing him that day. He laughed when he told me what it was and I was still clueless.

Foggy and 54 here-hiking earlier, I felt like I’d wandered into a British movie-I could barely see a foot down the trail, so I scooted into a clearing in front of an old cabin and watched the wildlife appear out of the fog-eerie...

I remember the WFTD from a long ago literature class-”God assoil thee, my lord”...

When everything is said and done
And we are worse off, still
I doubt anyone will assoil
The highwaymen on capitol hill

I wonder that we haven’t yet
Detained them in cells and chains
To keep them from setting fire
To what little sanity remains

We should toss them out, using
Whatever pertinent rules we must-
We are already broke from giving
Them our naive and ill-placed trust

I’ve got a small estimate to do, and I think I’ll stop at the deli for a turkey, cheese and veggie sandwich to go-I’m not long on tolerance today, so hopefully I won’t run into my lib plumber friend there again-back soon...

I had a buck run across the trail in front of me while jogging the park this am. It was overcast and sprinkling. A+ for you. I wish you lived closer. I have several jobs that need to be done.

Wish I could help-the estimate I did was far and away more work than I could do alone-there is some structural bracing/reinforcement required, so I told the customer I could get the contractor I work with to look at it, since he does that stuff. She didn’t have the money for any of that, which I can understand, so she will wait until after the first of the year to see if things get better. Not going to happen, not in this economic climate...

Looks like my co-workers and I are scrooged till after the holidays for yet another year. This is getting so, so tiresome and depressing...
