Romney retreats into California seclusion

SAN DIEGO — The man who planned to be president wakes up each morning now without a plan.

Mitt Romney looks out the windows of his beach house here in La Jolla...He devours news from 2,600 miles away in Washington about the "fiscal cliff" negotiations, shaking his head and wondering what if.

Gone are the minute-by-minute schedules and the swarm of Secret Service agents. There's no aide to make his peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Romney hangs around the house, sometimes alone, pecking away at his iPad and emailing his CEO buddies, who've been swooping in and out of La Jolla to visit. He wrote to one who's having a liver transplant soon: "I'll change your bedpan, take you back and forth to treatment."

SNIP

The defeated Republican nominee has practically disappeared from public view since his loss, exhibiting the same detachment that made it so difficult for him to connect with the body politic through six years of running for president. He has made no public comments since his concession speech in the early hours of Nov. 7, and avoided the news media last week during a private lunch with President Barack Obama at the White House. Through an aide, Romney declined an interview request for this story.

After Romney told his wealthy donors that he blamed his loss on "gifts" Obama gave to minority groups, his functionaries were unrepentant and Republican luminaries effectively cast him out. Few of the policy ideas he promoted are even being discussed in Washington.

SNIP

By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney's wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

Sure. Constantly saying he saw his father march with MLK is far less misleading than saying his father was a strong supporter of the Civil Rights movement.

Candidates often phrase things to be misleading.

You knew that, though.

Oh, ok.... your babble convinced me. Damn, how so very wrong I was!!!

You did a wonderful job of convincing me that your way is best. I can now see that Obama was the better choice between the only two choices we had available. Heck, come to think of it, in only 3 wonderful weeks Obama has yet again proven his superiority. I look forward to see our country go complete under as I too want to feed from the public trough. I wonder if I can get EBT cards in Gold or Platinum.

I find your argument/excuses to be complete nonsense, at best.

The talented Mr. Romney will do fine.

The irony is that the Obama voter seeking revenge will drive the rich into non investment and foreign hiding places. Meanwhile the low information community will have to contend with less wealth for distribution.

Silver lining. Had he won, the current Romney haters would have subjected us to two daily threads here:

1. Day in the Life of President Romney. (Accompanied by cheesey pictures.)

2. Pray for President Romney (accompanied by lame pages long Babble quotes cut and pasted from Holy Roller portals.)

Romney lost because he ran a poor campaign and was a poor candidate.Yes and he was also an incompetent or negligent candidate. He just laid down and let the dems walk all over him by vote fraud. Never raised his voice to demand a valid election. I think he was the mark in a scam by the consultants who wanted his money mnd didn't care if he won or lost. If he wanted to win, he must be incompetent to let them cheat like they did. Or did he throw the election for some other reason?

"Decent"??? The man is on record saying that a minor girl who gets pregant and wants an abortion but her parents forbid it, should be able to go to a judge to overrule her parents' authority. THAT IS INDECENT.

Decent?? The man went to great lengths in Massachusetts to advance the homosexual agenda via Gay Youth Pride to school children.

DECENT???

The man is a demonstrated opportunist liar:

When he ran for the Senate and for governor, he supported a ban on assault rifles and the Brady Bill's five-day waiting period for gun purchases. He proudly said those positions wouldn't make him "the hero of the NRA." As governor, he made Massachusetts the first state to permanently ban assault weapons. He has even flip-flopped about whether he owns any guns. In New Hampshire, he was asked his view on the Second Amendment. He responded that he had been a hunter "pretty much all my life." Later, red-faced aides of Romney had to admit that Romney had never had a hunting license, and under further questioning, Romney acknowledged that his "lifetime of hunting" was having shot at some birds during a Republican governors meeting during a fund-raising event and maybe shooting at "small varmints" when he was seventeen with his cousin..... (thanks to Repeat Offender for the above insight into the "decency" of Romney)

If that kind of guy is a "decent" Republican, then the Republican party is screwed six ways to Sunday and decent people will have to go third party in order to ditch this political gangrene of pure liberal statism in the Republican party that folks like YOU are touting as "decent."

You are correct and that’s part of the demographic problem.

Approx 2.5 million people die each year in the US, predominately old white Republican voters.

Being replaced almost entirely with 70% plus Dem voting black/hispanic/asians.

You don't spend 40 years telling people that you and/or your dad "marched with Martin Luther King", accidentally, or from having misspoke, or just choosing your words badly.

"Mitt Romney went a step further in a 1978 interview with the Boston Herald. Talking about the Mormon Church and racial discrimination, he said: “My father and I marched with Martin Luther King Jr. through the streets of Detroit.”"

"Yesterday, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom acknowledged that was not true. “Mitt Romney did not march with Martin Luther King,” he said in an e-mail statement to the Globe.

As a few people rally around the William Weld like liberal from Massachusetts, I have to ask.

What other conservative hating, anti-Reagan, rino do you want us to prop up and try to bestow status on?

Since when is it our job to lend credence and respectability to conservative hating rinos?

Ya know, conservativism lost the battle during the primaries, not during the POTUS campaign.

If you don't believe that, then you're even more of a RINO apologist / advocate than I thought.

Had Romney the RINO won, he and RINOism would have become even more sacred to the capitulators. Everything about him & RINOism would have been defended on sacred ground -- all on the basis that he was "better" than the alternative.

I look forward to see our country go complete under as I too want to feed from the public trough. I wonder if I can get EBT cards in Gold or Platinum.

Historical fact: WWI & its accompanying reparations, the German leaders who led them into it, and the German leaders post WWI drove the German economy more into the ground in the early 1920s than even Obama has in the past four years.

Under your scenario, and SoFloFREEPER's, I suppose had you been in Germany at the time of Hitler's rise, he would have looked as a "better alternative" than the Germany leaders who ran the economy into the ground.

That's what happens when you get into "better than the economy nosedive candidate" mentality.

You wind up getting a temporarily "better economy" for umpteen years...and finally realize you may have won the battle vs. the economic nosedivers but lost the overall war.

When will conservatives BEGIN to see that RINOs are not our big-tent friends, but rather are the liberals' "fifth column" who works against us from the inside-out?

By analogy, had Romney won, the conservative movement would have absolutely DEAD. There would have been ZERO TOLERANCE for critiquing RINOism...

Why? Because many of those who leapt into bed with Romney & RINOism now feel they have to defend their actions...and it's these...who have become the new apologists and defenders of RINOism.

You can talk all about your Gingrich support, but that was all a "past life" if you haven't repented of your pro-RiNOism.

I agree with you. I think the Romneys were decent and good people. They along with Ryan would have helped this country greatly. But the “takers” have won and now we must deal with what is. I do believe that just under 50% of Americans are decent, hardworking people of faith that have lost their country. The narcissistic tyrants that now control the executive branch are a danger both to the republic and the world. We can only pray for God’s grace for those of us who feel broken because of our choices. “Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world”

You forget that Romney did win office once, and he was terrible at it.

One term Governor, Romney, wanted to run for reelection, but the voters said no way.

Mitt left office with 34% approval, and his only legacy being gay marriage and Romneycare.

Geez Louize. I have some great swampland in Florida that is a real steal at $3 million -- are you interested?

LOOK AT THE MAN'S RECORD. He told you what you wanted to hear. "Drill baby drill" -- LOLOLOLOLOLOL!! Good grief, what a sucker and a sap you are!!! Weren't you paying attention in 2008 when Romney expressed his belief that "any carbon plan has to be worldwide in scope -- let's have a worldwide solution, not an American one" (his exact words, you gullible sucker) with regard to a "carbon plan" to solve an imaginary problem? If he'd won and when it came time to drill, Romney would have been eager and willing to be "responsible" and cautious about "drill baby drill" because he BELIEVES the Global Warming claptrap and as he is DEMONSTRABLY a dyed-in-the-wool statist (he is the Godfather of Obamacare, for crying out loud!!), he no doubt covets the extreme control such "neccessary" environmental "protections" require over our energy production AND our energy consumption, only HE is in favor of letting other nations take part in dictating OUR domestic energy policies -- what in hell do you think "worldwide solution" means?

Good grief!!!

There’s very little to be gained by talking about the Romneys period

You're right, no point in being pissed at Romney. Romney was just being Romney. I'm pissed at the ones who gave us Romney as a candidate and I'm not talking about the 35% or so primary voters who voted for him in the primaries but the G.O.P.e., Coulter, Hannity, et al.
