I really can’t agree with the statement that a DE includes a web browser. It may be technically true but I basically use chrome or firefox - I wouldn’t think of using the DE’s browser.

I use Gnome3 and aside from
- harder to customize (as mentioned)
- activities menu is a bit sluggish (as mentioned)

I find myself quite liking it.
