The mother of a 7-year-old Irving elementary school student says her son wet his pants in class after his teacher refused to let him use the restroom Thursday afternoon.
"I was absolutely appalled," Sonja Cross said. "I could not believe it."
The first-year teacher at J.O. Davis Elementary awards her students with "Boyd Bucks" for good behavior. Going to the bathroom outside of the three scheduled breaks costs two Boyd Bucks per trip.
Cross' son, an honor roll student, needed to go to the bathroom, but he sat back down because he didnt have any Boyd Bucks, his mother said.
"He tried to hold it as much as he could, but he just couldnt," Cross said. "He came home from school, and he was crying and really upset."
"Really, that's just unhealthy," Cross said. "I think that she had no concern for the children."
Cross complained to the teacher, but didnt like the response.
"Originally when I first spoke with the teacher, she was just going to show my son special treatment, but then I said, 'That's just not good enough. I need for you to stop this for all the children,'" she said.

I thought “Boyd Bucks” indicated the teacher was named “Boyd”, but there is no teacher by that name on this list.

If all your grades are B and up you are on the AB Honor Roll... pretty meaningless really
When I was in the 4th grade the Kalifornia school I was in had a bathroom stall in the classroom. The teacher told one kid he couldn’t use it because he recently had. He also couldn’t leave his desk to go to the outside bathroom. Well, he REALLY had to go pee, so he unziped his pants and pissed right into the walkway between the desks. I’m pretty sure we all laughed so hard we all had to pee. I remember that teacher being the “you need to learn to hold it” type.
I want to know who “Boyd” is and how he got this power.
In the old days, the teachers had the support of parents. If we got into trouble at school we were in worse trouble when we got home. These days the parents are a bigger problem than the kids. If a kid is disciplined at school, the parents are at school wanting to fight the teacher.
Not all teachers are stupid and belong to unions, and not all parents are good parents or homeschool teachers.
This year at a parents' meeting at our local HS two mothers got into a fight. The cops were called and they both went to jail and have been banned from school property.
I wonder how their kids behave at school!
If I was a teacher I’d let them go pee.
I suppose this was abused by kids in the past and that is where this program started, that must have been in the 70’s because it happened to me too.
Of course, if I were the teacher and you exposed yourself in class you’d be suspended for life and registered as a sex offender. lol
I was sent to the Pincipal’s Office once and after waiting for a minute I got up and left. I walked all the way home, I usually walked home, boy was my mother surprised to see me.
Of course I was taken back to the school. I did not get spanked by the principal without my parents approval, I can tell you that.
This has been in practice for well over 10 years.
I will never understand it other than the obedience angle someone else brought up.
If you are unable to determine the difference between a kid who abuses the privledge and the one who has to go, you should not be in charge of 2nd graders.
Had to go through a doctor back in the day, for my child who truly had to go, often.
It’s disgusting.
Happened to me in the 70’s, that is definitely over 10 years, in the same school system as this story.
This happened to me as my school would not let you use the bathroom during recess. It was winter, cold as crap, and when the dam broke the 3 inches of snow on the ground didnt help conceal the evidence.
There is no excuse why a small child cannot be allowed to go when they have to go! You aren’t instilling any positive character traits by having a kid wet themselves.
The teachers were different in those days. Growing up in a small town, my parents knew most of the teachers outside of school.
bump
This was done to be when I was a child, also. Needless to say, I didn’t make it. When I told me mother about it, she told me to just get up and go to the bathroom when I had to go. The hell with the hall passes and that nonsense. I never asked again for a pass. I just got up and left when necessary.
What does all your obiter dictum have to do with the price of tea in China? Bathroom visits as needed were NOT a problem with a reasonably well behaved group of 30 second graders. The only “break” was lunchtime/recess. You complain about something that I personally observed to be a non problem.
Here is the superintendents contact info.
Contact her and ask the teacher be severely disciplined and or fired for child abuse
Superintendent Dana Bedden, Ed.D. dbedden@irvingisd.net 972-600-5001
Lets do her the way we did the 2 idiots in Mass that disgraced the War Memorial in DC
Liberalism’s mean streak (humanist amoral authoritarianism) is moving on the public school children and their families via teachers and staff.
Even when public school abuse is confronted by parents, they have no shame. How horrible.
I didn’t get paddled much. I was a quiet kid. I was a good kid. I hated getting into trouble.
I also dreaded it. I knew it was coming. I knew I didn’t have those fake ‘bucks’ to get a restroom break, I had already used five ‘bucks’ for something else. I don’t remember what.
I asked and was refused a restroom break. I asked again and was told I needed a certain number of those ‘bucks’.
What could I do? I was scared to death. My heart was pounding. I was a kid, what options did I have?
I dug through the desk. I dug out everything and laid it all on the floor. Every wadded up paper, every broken pencil and crayon, on the floor. I was obviously very desperate to find one of those colorful ‘bucks’.
There weren’t enough. As I had known all along. Everyone in class was staring at me the whole time. The teacher wasn’t going to let me go to the restroom.
I don’t remember her name. I really don’t care to remember anyway. What kind of teacher makes a little kid pee their pants in front of the whole class?
I was sent out of the class. I remember a counselor or something giving me another pair of pants from some school closet. I don’t even remember if I was sent back to class or not. I blocked most of that day out I think.
I never had a high opinion of schools and teachers after that. I remember I had a real loathing for my mean 4th grade teacher Mrs. Coop! I did get a little crush on my 5th grade teacher, Miss Melanie Griffith (Griffin?).
Dang if Miss Griffith didn’t turn up as one of my 6th grade teachers, spelling I think! Later I heard she was dating the limping science teacher, he was always kind of funny, but I didn’t like him after that.
To make this post short.... I really really really hate the idea of not letting kids go to the bathroom!!!! I really really really really hate it!!
I sent him a face book message
Common sense, compassion and a functioning brain are not a requirement any more for being a teacher.
What happens on the Internet stays on the Internet. This incident is going to follow this kid for the rest of his life.
