Conservatism comes from privation...

Some of the best words I've ever read on Free Republic. And there will be plenty of privation ahead.

In fact, IMHO, the most conservative groups of all time include the old Soviet Politburo, China's Communist Party and the mullahs in every nation in the Middle East.

American "liberalism" will quickly lead to the WORST form of conservatism.

Sounds like Romney met a few more of your pragmatic criteria (e.g. better on the economy) than Obama. Knowing that America as we know it will end regardless of who we voted for may lessen the differences between you and your FIL which are not all that great looking at the bigger picture. As a father you ought to realize that there is more to marriage than cohabitation and having better looking pieces of paper than power of attorney and hospital visitation rights. Marriage is infinitely more than that.

It would be interesting to think about what you would think about the past election had Hillary won the nomination instead of your preferred "outsider" BHO. BHO was not just an outsider, he has at least moral support from enemies of America. Hillary on the other hand would likely have lost the sycophant media once she got hit with a few Clintonesque scandals. All of BHO's scandals have been papered over with media lies. So we are stuck with him unravelling capitalism one section at a time (war on coal, union giveaways, etc) instead of replacing Hillary with a republican version of Hillary.

I do appreciate the thoughtfulness of your approach to politics, but I believe it lacks a bigger picture perspective and perhaps even a firm moral grounding (although I also lack that grounding). Hopefully you will have some success in fixing your personal life and that we can all survive until we get a leader that can bring America back to its roots and restore it as the beacon and savior of the free world.

That said, I actually favor Romneycare since it is 78 pages and tackles nothing outside of Healthcare

That is all the details a real conservative needs to oppose it

You seem to be well informed about everything except Obama’s Marxist background, associations and statements, all well documented at the time, all of which trumps your (or anyone’s) noble excuses for voting for him in 2008. You helped elect a little wannabe stalin, friend of a domestic terrorist, parishioner of an America-whitey hating preacher. What did you expect? Seriously. The man had declared that the U.S. Constitution was a flawed document that granted the citizens what he and his Marxist pals “negative liberties”, and that he was going to fix that. Are you disappointed that he hasn’t (yet) managed to turn this country into a gulag without those pesky “negative liberties”?

Best wishes on handling your dispute with your father-in-law, an uninformed liberal like yourself.

I’m giving you lots of luck but these tough old birds were .....their hearts get impenetrable. He won’t leave you and wife jack squat

My advice which I know you will never respond to me on this thread is get your wife to get him to put his assets into a revocable trust. Been there done that. This way you screw the the propate lawyers and judges

You picked the democrat version of those views. I picked the GOPe version of those views.

You said it a lot more succinctly but that was my thought. The FIL voted presumably out of race loyalty and/or progressivism. The SIL voted out of loyalty to the cause which has more than a hint of progressivism.

I am nearly 60 years old. Here is my advice.

Don’t waste your time with Idiots and Fools.

How many heartbeats did you waste trying to explain what every rational person already knows? In fact, I do not agree with some of your points because it seems to me that you are capitulating to him looking for some common ground.

As a Conservative, you and he have NO common ground.

Your Email to him comes off as groveling to me. Granted, I could just be in a sour mood, but you owe your F-I-L no Apology for your Convictions. You are raising his Grandchildren and your F-I-L gives not one iota for their future.

F him and F all his sycophant Obama loving Family and Friends. You and your Family are better of without his poison in your lives.

Change your Email and Phone Number and move on.

Obama Supporters make Useful Idiots look like Einstein.
They are beyond redemption and have no capability of rational thought.

Now, you may think I am a fool or idiot (or both) after reading my thoughts on your Vanity. If so, I understand.
My patience for all things Obama is at its end.

>> I don’t think conservatives should “pander to blacks”.

Agreed. But that doesn’t mean we abandon the Black community at large.

When 92-98% of the voting Blacks vote “against” Conservatives/Republicans, one might get the sense we’re being renounced by the entirety of Black America. Might that perception elicit apathy and contempt? Sure, but is it the correct perception? I don’t think so.

There’s really no need to court a particular ethnicity, gender, age. The correct message of Liberty should and will suffice. Any jackwagon that refuses to embrace our Constitutional Liberties doesn’t deserve our time nor concern.

This is a unique time for Blacks in America, but they’re not making the best of it, and neither is the vast majority of the other Democrats.

- -

BBW, I’m guessing things will work out for you and your FIL.

Nope because it forces freeloaders of healthcare to share the costs. Devil is in the details. Never make fast judgements without understanding the details.

I say this, not to inflame, but to ask...Does he want to keep you on the Government Plantation? Does he feel it reasonable to not respect your opinion? You seem informed and capable of making a reasoned decision about who you thought might offer the best leadership to the country and for you posterity. Your father-in-law is presumptuous and unreasonable. You are a grown man. Make your own decisions. If he disagrees, fine...if he react so irrationally it is a problem of his own making. You have been gracious to him with your exposition. That should placate him, but if it does not, shake the dust off of your cloak, back away, and give him all the time he needs to come to his senses.

My Advice:

1.) Keep it short stupid!
2.) Entire text of letter: “My first priority will always be that [my son] have as” little National Debt to pay off as possible. Therefore, I will NEVER vote for ANY Candidate who supports Re-Distribution Communism, “from each according to his ability, and to each according to his need.” (Karl Marx)
3.) Close with “The Father of your Grandson [Grandson’s name], and sign with [Your Name].
4.) Ask your wife if she wants domestic peace with her Dad, or low National Debt for her son. Point out that the two are mutually exclusive.
5.) Wait for the ice to thaw in your house, and then mail the letter.

BTW, Winter is approaching so this might take awhile - - - .

True, indeed. I was a Kool-Aid drinker in 2007 and 2008. In fact, I was raised on Kool-Aid, was waterboarded with Kool-Aid throughout my college and post-graduate school years, and have only within the past three or four years begun the process of detoxification. My apologies for what I and my fellow Kool-Aid drinkers did to America in 2008. If we were in the same room, I suppose I could let you flog me. I did help put a stop to some of the worst excesses in 2010, and at considerable risk to my personal and professional associations, I did what I could in 2012 to convince people not to re-up. I figure I have 40 or so years left in my life to make up for my past political misdeeds.

I suppose I could say that fortunately that is not an issue in this scenario. He doesn't have squat to his name, and likely will die that way.

Believe me, that’s ultimately where this goes if he so chooses. I would be fine with it.
