Washington (CNN) - After two years of endless debate and a national election, Democrats and Republicans on Thursday found themselves right where they started -- blaming each other for stagnant negotiations on taxes and government spending.
This time, they face an imminent deadline of automatic tax increases and spending cuts in 33 days -- the looming fiscal cliff at the end of the year that economists fear could cause another recession.
After meeting separately with President Barack Obama's point man on the talks, top congressional Democrats and Republicans said the failure to move forward was the other side's fault.
House Speaker John Boehner declared himself disappointed that "no substantive progress" has occurred, saying Republicans were waiting for the White House to propose significant spending cuts.
Obama "has to get serious," Boehner told reporters following his discussion with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. "It's very clear what kind of spending cuts need to occur, but we have no idea what the White House is willing to do."

No progress probably means progress. He’s not caving....yet.
If these democrats want to take money from ppl, I think they should show good faith and take all their wealth and donate it to the US government..obama is always bragging ppl like him who can pay more taxes should, but he seemed to enjoy taking all the deductions he could..so have the rich democrats lead by example...
Obamsky (rhymes with Alinsky) wants a crash to complete his communist coup.
No deal will happen....we crash and Obamsky takes TOTAL control to save the masses.
Hey, Weepy! Instead of an income tax increase, how about proposing a wealth tax increase? Let’s have Warren Buffet put some skin in the game!
You do that and watch the DemocRAT sphincters shrink...
This is all just another Kabuki dance.
What they are trying to do now is figure out how they can who-do us without riots breaking out.
Revenue has never been the answer, cut spending is.
Is Hillary still taking the deduction for donating Slick’s used underwear to Salvation Army?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Oh yes, Mr. Boner, there is certainly progress.
The democrats are kicking your yellow ass and the only thing you are doing is pulling down your pants and saying aim here.
...kick the can further down the road.
Pull out. End negotiation. When you get blamed for it, say, “Last time I checked this country voted for Obama to do this.”
Correct, but even morons like 0bama and Reid know that Boehner is as spineless as a jellyfish, so all they have to do is wait.
Why do I find it so very hard to trust Boehner on ANYTHING?
Worthless RINO piece of crap!!!!
This is all brinksmanship to make the other side propose entitlement cuts first. If we do, we will lose in 2014 because of it. Don’t give in ... make Obama outline his “balanced approach.” tm
