MADISON, Wis. (AP) Night deer hunting for Wisconsin's Chippewa tribes began Monday evening, but a spokeswoman for the commission overseeing it said no hunters had obtained permits to participate.
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, which oversees the Chippewa's off-reservation treaty rights, authorized night hunting last week for tribal members who meet a number of safety requirements, including a marksmanship test. The decision drew sharp opposition from state officials, who said night deer hunting was too dangerous and have gone to court to stop it.
Commission spokeswoman Sue Erickson said 74 tribal members from five of Wisconsin's six Chippewa tribes met the marksmanship requirements, making them eligible for a permit. However, none had applied by Monday afternoon. If they had, they would have been able to head out 50 minutes after sunset, a day after the state's traditional firearms season ended.

Did the Chippewa traditionally shine deer?
Should note that the ceded territory is about a third of the State of Wisconsin. Personally I'm not sure night hunting would be a particular problem, though perhaps might be necessary to be restricted on public lands. Chippewa excepted.

Sure, they had spotlights when they made the treaty in (I think) the mid late 1840s. Give the elders credit for thinking ahead, at least when it comes to game. Who would have thought you’d need licenses back in the day.
Except for the fact that it's unlawful... I could see the practicality of a night hunt without a spotlight.
There's a reason for the historical phrase "Hunter's Moon".

Well, I think the issue here revolves more about treaty rights. But I think a night hunt would be interesting. If safety is an issue, perhaps try it with bow.
Its pretty bright here tonight but I don’t trust my eyes in the dark the way I used too. We used to run through the woods chasing coonhounds without lights but these days I wouldn’t do it with a light.
I wouldn't know. It would be unlawful these days. ;)

Yeah, I break easier, also. ;)

Depends on how far away from the SUV/4-wheeler they are.
I have hunted at night quite a few times but it is legal here for predators only, not game animals.
You can only hunt at night on private property with the owners permission.
Shining Jacks at night is a hoot.
You have to wonder why the SF Chronicle would care about Indian hunting rights in Wisconsin.
No, they used to net them.
I spent a night at a friend’s ranch on pest patrol spotlighting and exterminating armadillos.

The Comanche moon, and Apache moon. That’s when they went out on night war raids because it was so light.
I first learned about any kind of 'hunter's moon' from the phrase 'la lune du chasseur' in a rather racy book written in French that I was claiming was required reading material when I was about 11. ;)
Technically, Sept is the Harvest Moon, Oct. is Hunter's Moon, and November's moon is.... bright.

Where’s my casino ?
Indians have hunted at night ever since they arrived here. Asking a marksmanship test is asinine, as anyone who ever trained LEO’s at a range can affirm those usually at risk of shooting their own foot or their fellow LEO checking the shooting skills of hunters is going from the sublime to the ridiculous.
