The Brother I have isn't good for photos but the cartridges don't have any electronics in them and are easy and cheap to refill.
It's on the family network so everyone here uses it.

I have a MFC-J6710W on my desk at work and the older model 11x17 at the house. Both do reasonable on photo grade paper and I like the 11x17. I really like the copy/scan/print combination (who still uses a fax?).
The real plus is they are $200 printers and cartridges are <$5 from 101inks.com...
