Why?
Because the streets in urban neighborhoods are littered with dead cats that have been killed by vehicles.........
When it comes to avoiding traffic, cats are just as dumb as squirrels..........

Hype much? I've lived in urban areas for most of my life, and have only rarely seen a dead cat in the street. Run over possums, on the other hand, are common.
My wife and I have had cats for the eighteen years we've been together, and they've all been outdoor kitties. We've noticed that they roam, but never that far from home. For the most part, they hang out in the yard, because that's where it's safe, and that's where their food bowl is.
We've also never seen a rodent in any house we've lived, though I used to get plenty of them in the house before I had cats.
