Except they have armored vehicles, air superiority, control of the internet, and nukes.

How did all of those advantages work out in Viet Nam and Afghanistan?

Contrary to popular belief, the goal in Vietnam and Afghan were not the destruction of the Vietnamese or Muslim Afghanistans, but if some totalitarian regime arises off the blessings of a perverted Supreme Court, then no quater will be given and the strategy of COIN would not be implemented by those who seek to destroy liberty minded individuals. It will be Waco every hour on the hour.

The jungle and the desert are harsh to mechanized equipment. Urban areas with plenty of garages will be far more friendly to the guys that have to work on vehicles.

Sorry to be a bit of a downer, but let me pose and answer an important question. What do the American Revolutionary War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and the Nothern Ireland uprisings have in common? Answer: the counter-insurgent troops landed in foreign lands of which they had little to no direct knowledge.

Unfortunately: if it comes down to an American dictatorship, its minions will be your fellow Americans. I.e., they will know the turf (except locally.)

Sad to say, but the only valid precedent you have for such a scenario is the U.S. Civil War. The Union didn't know the turf locally, but they did know the nation and the nationality. Those counter-insurgents didn't.

If it comes down to the scenario becoming reality, I'd run hard from any would-be general who assures everyone that the battle will go just like the Revolutionary War. The U.S. military's home base is not the U.K.
