“The U.S. military’s home base is not the U.K.”

No it isn’t, is it? And you think thats an advantage? You couldn’t be more wrong. Check out post #98.
Texas alone could easily swallow up our military. It is utterly not desinged, sized, or equipped to fight where it lives. At best it could hold cities.

And a fun factoid. The states most likely to be the targets of a Totalitarian socialist America, are the very states that provide the soldiers. Many of them will desert if asked to attack their hometowns. The military would have a huge problem of dissent, and trying to decide who was untrustworthy inside their own units.

On its Best day, the Armed IRA numbered a few hundred. They held on for decades.
And your examples were Vietnam, Iraq, and the IRA. Each lasted a decade or more. And the north didn’t win the civil war because they were locals, who knew the south better than the southerers. They won because of things like incredible production of food, weapons, manpower, ships, etc.
They were an industrial nation fighting an agrarian state.

Sure, it wouldnt be a foreign military. But that means they have to attack everything, hold everything, AND protect their own families and bases. All with a million and a half? And thats going to be interesting to see what happens when all the US military on earth leaves its far flung outposts to come home and fight. How you deal with everything that breaks out geo-politically?

No, even a COIN effort here would quickly turn into a nightmare. A full on fight would be impossible.

The point I was making was that any would-be oligarchs of America would be Americans too. Almost certainly born and raised.

Foreigners are largely ignorant of how America really works and what Americans are really like. I'm sure you've seen that many times. But, it's also true of any country. With respect to COIN, what this translates into is a huge disadvantage vis-a-vis native insurgents. In this scenario, the ignorant foreigners are the COINs. Book learning and briefing books can only take you so far. They can never tell you if you're being kidded along, for example.

But if you grew up in the same nation and culture, you're a lot harder to fool. That ignorant-foreigner disadvantage largely disappears. That's why FARC, the Shining Path and those Chiapas (?) rebels were only successful in carving out a de facto semi-autonomous region in the country that they and the legitimate government share. As for Mexico, the drug lords have done a lot more to undermine the Mexican government than the Chiapas boys have.

But the points you raise just reinforce my belief that anyone seriously proposing to turn America into a dictatorship would be deemed insane - even by those who'd secretly like to. If you can think of those points, it's a sure bet that Pentagon experts have thought of several more. And would be very eager to list them to any would-be cabal.

I know that the Messiah won his second term, but the Dems got slapped down hard in 2010. Again, they fell into the trap of assuming that their favourite nostrums are more popular than they actually are. Now that they've been slapped, they'll almost certainly be very cautious about (say) gun-grabbing. Thankfully, even the real tyrants in America know when it's time to back off.
