Next time NASA sends astronauts to Mars in the 2030s they won't be eating freeze dried food or liquid meals. That's so last millenium. On their projected mission to Mars NASA astronauts will eat 100% vegan meals complete with fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the spaceship.
How is this possible? It's all thanks to the research being done by NASA's Advanced Food Technology (AFT) project. Since Mars has some gravity, the AFT researchers believe astronauts will be able to chop, cook vegetables and even grow their own plants using hydroponics.
The six to eight astronauts that will participate in the Mars mission will require enough food for three years. Mars is so far away that NASA won't be able to send food every six months like they do for the International Space Station. Neither will they be able to preserve meat or dairy for such a long period. according to senior research scientist Maya Cooper.

Well, now that the menu is set, the rest is just details.
in the book PACKING FOR MARS which is a hoot there is a story about recyling waste. everyone knows about urine and it really doesn’t bother folks that much but the boffins on stage then starting discussing recycling human solid waste for food. an astronaut ended that discussion when he stood up and said. “we are not going to spend 6 months flying back from mars eating sh**burgers!”
This will cause someone to crack and destroy the ship.
LOL!!!!
Shut NASA down. If there ever was a pie-in-the-sky, over-blown, over-budget outfit, this is it. I don’t care where we came from, but I do know where we are going....down the toilet. You can’t live on ChiCom cash forever.
If you can claw your way to the top of the atmosphere carrying a cow, you’re welcome to all the steak you can eat in space.
Maya Cooper has a lot to learn. Maybe she should check out Mountain House or Augusson Farms. Or any 'prepper' website, for that matter. Maybe some of those millions of freeze dried meals the Government bought could be packed along. They're light, fairly good eating, and while not cheap, aren't too far out of line...and they keep for 20-30 years. (Powdered milk, freeze dried cheeze, powdered eggs, freeze dried beef, turkey, and chicken...)
100% vegan meals
that means no Russians
Sheila Jackson is so dumb and stupid!
She would loose a spelling bee of four letter words to a Babboon! even if thew four letter words were drawn from the top 5 curse words!
Send the Obama family.
What happened to the Freeze Dried Steaks, Pork Chops, Burgers etc that have a guarantted shelf life of 25 Years!
Did we find H2O on Mars yet with our multi Billion Dollar Rovers up there yet? What are the Astronauts going to eat during the year and a half ride to Mars? Then are they going to stay there for the year hoping something finally grows, before they spend a year and a half returning?
Sounds like the NASA DIRECTOR has been extremely successful in accomplishing His Top Priority Assignment given to him by Obama HUSSEIN! He clearly has Islamic Muslim Terrorists still stuck in the Seventh Century level of Intelligence and Knowledge planning America’s 2030 Trip to Mars with Non Existent Hardware, Resources and shear Stupidity!
I am Glad I believe in Our GOD and NOT their ALLAH! and his Prophet, Obama HUSSEIN as declared by the Madman Farrakkon!
Maya Cooper says meat and dairy cannot be preserved for a 3 year period. MRE’s stored at 50 degrees F will last 5 years. Dehydrated meat can store with quality as long as 25 years. In the clod arid environment of space, storage conditions would be near ideal.
Clearly, meats can be preserved that long. This twit proves that NASA has become a joke. This sounds like another “Hansen” situation.
Some Vegans working at NASA, have decided with messianic zeal, that astronausts should all be vegans.
And vegan means they have decided that it is a pure vegetable diet. This is a jihad, not a serious scientist.
What we have now is a golden age on Earth, and taking it too far is a waste of time and money.
I think that’s why NASA created the new astronaut position, “Community Organizer”. In case of emergency the most useless crewman becomes food.
I'm not going to be too specific, but look up 'low residue meals fighter pilot'.
I've made those meals for fighter pilots looking forward to ferrying single seat fighter aircraft across oceans in 14 hour+ flights with in-flight refueling.
Those meals don't include a bunch of cabbage and beans.

they’ve obviously never heard of powdered mikl, beef jerky, and some sausages that last virtually (seemingly) forever.
one pound of dried meat weighs the same as one pound of cauliflower
Maybe NASA can buy the Twinkie company. Those things last forever in any environment.
