Jeremy Friehling, the 23-year-old son of Bernard Madoffs former auditor, David Friehling, has died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The younger Friehling was attending medical school at Ohio State University. Police found his body last Thursday inside his apartment in Columbus, Ohio, after his friends contacted them after some of his Facebook postings aroused concerns about his wellbeing. He was a valedictorian in his high school in New City, N.Y., and was active in sports, according to the Journal News. He graduated from Duke University.
His father, David Friehling, was a partner in the New City, N.Y., accounting firm Friehling & Horowitz, which was the long-time auditing firm for Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities. Friehling issued yearly audit opinions on Madoffs investment firm from 1991 to 2008, but admitted that he never conducted any audit or examination of the now-imprisoned Ponzi schemers financial statements. The elder Friehling pleaded guilty in November 2009 to charges of securities fraud, investment adviser fraud and obstructing tax law administration. However, he assisted prosecutors and was able to avoid a prison sentence, although he forfeited $3 million from his work for Madoff.
Madoffs son Mark also committed suicide, hanging himself inside his apartment at the age of 46.
We’ll probably never know the rest of the story. But the Bible does say that “the wages of sin is death.” Are you happy yet Bernie?
I also remember Jesus saying that He did not come to judge, but to save and that Jesus said to them, Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” (Note: tax collectors were thieves)
“Neither... thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
As long as we are at the vineyard at the last hour, it does not matter where we were previously. God seems to pick the biggest screw ups for his most important work. Look at Moses who was a murderer prior to leading the Jews out of Egypt. Look at Saul who persecuted Christians prior to becoming Paul, the great evangelist. Or Peter who denied Jesus, cut off the slaves ear prior to becoming the father of the church.
Thankfully, the clothes one wore prior to entering the kingdom does not matter when they arrive cleansed.
Forgiveness is available to all, no matter what they have done in their past.
Jew-hate never rests, does it?
And David whom God called “a man after my own heart” though he had caused the deaths of 85 temple priests and their entire families at Nob..........So would you clarify your point please?
How is it that we conclude this tragedy is related to what the young man’s father does for a living? How do you know he felt either guilt or pride over what one of his father’s clients did? I see no evidence of either guilt or pride. He was in a completely different field a long way from the Madoff mess.
I agree with you.
Sad. RIP.
