<Talk about a way to get people to want to be off of Poverty!
I don’t know. My great aunt got government cheese many, many years ago. She shared some with us and it was pretty tasty!
Do they even give away cheese anymore? Maybe in WIC, but that’s store stuff, not ‘government cheese.’ : )
When I was young, after they'd give out all the cheese and butter to the poor, they've have lots left over so they'd give it to everyone. I don't know anyone on our little town who didn't have a box or two at all times. I doubt the grocery store even stocked cheese. It was some gooood stuff.
No, I don't think the government does cheese or other foods these days.
Back in the day, our school lunch ladies were country moms who knew how to put out a spread and used real food so no one skipped lunch. They made the most marvelous homemade hot rolls and served them with a big hunk of government butter. There was always a hunk of cheese or mac 'n cheese. The government also gave away peanut butter so the ladies would bake up big peanut butter cookies or have apples to dunk into peanut butter and honey (also government). That was back when no one died from peanuts.
