Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 14, 2012-- alexithymia
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
alexithymia {ey-lek-suh-thahy-mee-uh}
noun:
1. Inability to describe emotions in a verbal manner.
2. (Psychiatry.) Difficulty in experiencing, expressing, and describing emotional responses.
Etymology: Origin: The term alexithymia was coined by psychotherapist Peter Sifneos in 1973. The word comes from the Ancient Greek words λέξις (lexis, "diction", "word") and θυμός (thumos, "soul, as the seat of emotion, feeling, and thought") modified by an alpha-privative, literally meaning "without words for emotions".
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Kinda chokes me up too, like grandma’s cooking. But when we see the splinter in our neighbor’s eye we stick our finger right in and remove it... the splinter....usually.
This must have been a horribly rough month for your family. I’m so sorry and hope getting to see him and say goodbye will be a little comfort in time.
A lot of NHL players seem to have a Alexithymia, but that’s probably because English is not their first language
thank you, whyisa, we are doing ok. i think it worked out well, all things considered, in that there was an opportunity for a meaningful goodbye.
On election night, at the point where an obama win seemed likely, I had to go to bed, since I had a medical diagnostic procedure (requiring anesthesia) scheduled the next day. But I already felt a profound sense of disappointment and sadness in the pit of my stomach. Thus I had no alexithymia.
The next morning, I found out what had happened with the election. That only enforced my sense of disappointment and sadness. But I put it out of my mind so that I could go to the clinic. The results of the procedure were very positive.
Once the effects of the anesthetic wore off, and I tried to learn what had REALLY happened, my main emotion was anger at the likelihood that this election was “won” via massive voter fraud, including the disenfranchising of our brave troops overseas, who put their lives on the line to defend and protect us. Again no alexithymia.
There are certain things that happen to me in the Orthodox Church that have emotional content, but which I cannot describe in words. But this is not due to alexithymia, since these things are ineffable (another potential Word of the Day).

Tomorrow begins the Nativity Fast, on the Orthodox New Calendar. As is my practice, I will be fasting from posting on this forum—if I am indeed able. And I will be going to Holy Confession, including confessing sins relating to my internet posts.
However, PLEASE—in the meantime—PLEASE Governor Romney and Reince Priebus (my Orthodox Christian Brother, by the way)—DEMAND recounts in every state that has evidence of voter fraud. DEMAND that all military votes be counted!!!! Then we shall—against all odds—have a President in the While House in 2013—NOT a dictator who gained reelection by fraud and deceit!!!!
A+++
They’re playing hookey instead of hockey.
Gloomy today again, but warmer-
Obama’s stupid press gaggle
Needs a little bit more paint
To make it somewhat factual
And not so much of a feint
That he experiences alexithymia
Is not to be believed at all-
He’s just channeling Nixon
And hoping not to take a fall
It didn’t work for Nixon, dude-
And it isn’t going to work for you
Your enemies have real money and power-
They’re patient, and see all you do...
Have a blessed Fast.
Good one!!!!
A+++

Thank you!
Are you Orthodox, too?
Quite welcome.
No, I’m Roman Catholic although I do very much admire the toughness of the Eastern Orthodox. You have some very tough fasts.
Thank you!
Nixon’s 2nd was the first presidential election I was old enough to vote in, so I was especially appalled when Watergate broke-I was very young and idealistic then...
Thank you!
Corrupt politicians do not learn that all it takes is one little drop of blood in the water, one tiny whiff of rotten fish in the trash to bring the sharks and make them forget which side pays them to stay away...
And he’s just a pig farmer from IA.
Then we’ll both celebrate the Nativity of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ together, which Lord willing will be joyous!!!!
Together. Two weeks apart. ;-)
Since I am on the New Calendar (in my OCA parish), I will celebrate the Nativity on December 25th.
However, I almost always celebrate Badnje Vece (Serbian Christmas Eve) with my Serbian parish, on the evening of January 6th.
