Treating a mental disorder with genital mutilation has never made sense to me...

ITA! It sounds to me like what he/she needed was serious psychotherapy; not a sex-change.
Ditto!
A lot of these people are just unhappy and think that if they were just "someone else" all the unhappiness would go away. But as a wise philosopher (Buckaroo Banzai) once said, "No matter where you go, there you are."
Change your clothes, location, hair, face or body; doesn't matter. You have to change your heart, your attitude, your goals and your outlook if you want to actually change.
But that is much more work then just having the doc do a "snip and tuck".
Thank you. I am against this type of surgery; and, the reason is that it is just treating the superficial aspects of the persons mental disorder. I feel sorry for people who are going through this type of thing; but, allowing 17 year olds to decide that they want such a serious and consequential change is nuts. These people need help; but, I have come to believe that so do the people who support this stuff.
One day it dawned on me, after hearing somebody on t.v. talk about how they never felt like a "boy" and they always felt like a girl. It sounded a lot like a compulsive disorder where you just can't get a thought to stop repeating in your mind. And, then I thought that, that would be like the people who have the feeling that they constantly must wash their hands. Well, we don't chop off their hands and think that we have solved their problem.
But, with these poor folks, chopping off their sexual organs and then pumping them with hormonal drugs seems to be the only method they believe will help. There has to be something less drastic.
Seems like if they did that to me, it would CAUSE the mental disorder, not CURE one.
