Word For The Day, Monday, 10/29/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sockdolager; noun
1. something unusually large, heavy, etc. 2. a decisive reply, argument, etc. 3. a heavy, finishing blow: His right jab is a real sockdolager.
Etymology: 1830, "a decisive blow," fanciful formation from sock (v.) "hit hard;" also said to be a variant of doxology, on a notion of "finality." The meaning "something exceptional" is attested from 1838. Sockdologising was nearly the last word President Abraham Lincoln heard. During the performance of Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin," assassin John Wilkes Booth (who knew the play well) waited for the line "Well, I guess I know enough to turn you inside out, you sockdologising old man-trap," and as the audience laughed, Booth fired the fatal shot.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Xsboy just texted that SU has cancelled classes for this aft and tomorrow bc of the storm.
I’ve read both that he went to bed to rest up for Vegas and that he was awake and watching. Regardless, he’s culpable for those deaths! A+++
That’s great!!
As more and more of the story of Obama’s ineptitude and ignoring events in Libya come out, it may well prove to be the sockdolager from which he cannot recover.
I voted nearly a month ago and am beating myself up agonizing over what they may be doing with my ballot in the mean time. Worry, worry.
But all of the news programs have been showing the candidates encouraging folks to vote early. You know, Michelle O came to Wisconsin just to tell her folks to vote early because “Your toilets may be overflowing on election day.” Truly! I thought that was insulting to the people of Wisconsin, but it is what it is.
But, on Sat., both sides were telling people to vote early, and all of the Fox News readers were saying the same, warning of potentially lengthy power outages. Florida was reporting long lines at the polls and churches in Florida were delivering parishioners to the polls by the bus load.
I didn’t “rag” on her because I was on my way to church and suddenly had a dead battery in my car. But I thought angry thoughts. She acted like she had never heard of voting early. I’m still mad about 2000 when I had 3 “in laws” who didn’t vote because they weren’t registered. Sometimes I wonder about the choices my kids made when they married! Arrrrrggggghhh!
Honestly, I really wasnt aware that VA had early voting until recently. I’ve lived here since 1978 and have never missed a nationwide or statewide election. It’s not part of the culture here to vote early, so I take umbrage on your daughters behalf in this regard. I don’t KNOW anyone who’s voted early in VA! The dems want early voting bc that facilitates fraud IMO. I am at the polls when they open on Election Day, and will be there next tues no matter what the weather or power situation.
He misses one thing, Cuyahoga as opposed to the rest of the state, is only down 20,000 in early votes so far. They’ll actually exceed 2008. The good news is some of that will be Republicans.
It’s the college kids that will stay home, or split there vote, that will doom Obama but he’ll come out of Cuyahoga with a John Kerry 2004 like margin.
IF you really want to know the Ohio results early, look at the Lake County, OH elections website right after all the early absentees post at 7:35 EST.
“Benghazi” should be the Sockdolager of the Last Week of Campaigning.
A+++ needs wider coverage!
Yes indeed! A+++
When the storm’s said & done, we’ll see how much of a soakdolager Sandy was...
Soaking us as we speak! A +++
Early voting is a crock. It just gives people more time to cheat and more time to round up the uninterested and bribe them to vote.
Vote on one day. Absentee ballots available, in advance, for good cause.
Closed primaries.
That’s how you run an election.
Are they counting ballots early, too, and releasing results? That gives cheaters an idea of how many more people to drag to the polls.
Insanity.
You are so right, their helmets are awful!
I agree completely.
VA has closed primaries, and i literally had NO idea that VA had early voting until a few weeks ago. It never occurred to me to vote BEFORE Election Day. Xsboy is the only one who’s voted bc he voted absentee from college.
I guess we are next. Tonight sometime, or tomorrow. All emergency personnel are to report by 2pm today to set up. The next county has all roads closed by 4pm. Schools across the region had early dismissal, so the kiddies are all home now. DH even took down his precious inflatables before Halloween. Keep an eye out for me and post class on FRiday if I disappear. Thanks.
I hope your trees only sway gently and that the rain is good for the yard-stay safe...
Hillary tried to warn everyone
About that ominous 2 AM call-
Now, since she was quite correct
She’s about to take a big fall
While Obama is playing emperor
The sockdolagers are on the way-
A perfect hurricane and Bengazi
To put his incompetence on display
Hillary was wary of his koolaid-
She avoided it, and never drank
And due to that moment of wisdom
She’s forced now to walk the plank
