Word For The Day, Monday, 10/29/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sockdolager; noun
1. something unusually large, heavy, etc. 2. a decisive reply, argument, etc. 3. a heavy, finishing blow: His right jab is a real sockdolager.
Etymology: 1830, "a decisive blow," fanciful formation from sock (v.) "hit hard;" also said to be a variant of doxology, on a notion of "finality." The meaning "something exceptional" is attested from 1838. Sockdologising was nearly the last word President Abraham Lincoln heard. During the performance of Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin," assassin John Wilkes Booth (who knew the play well) waited for the line "Well, I guess I know enough to turn you inside out, you sockdologising old man-trap," and as the audience laughed, Booth fired the fatal shot.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
Sandy or no Sandy, this week Mitt has to deliver the sockdolager of his campaign. These endorsements from RIDICULOUSLY left papers bode well for him. Papers do not like to be wrong. Unless they are the NYTimes.

No pushing at the door please!
Good morning. Glad you could make it. Hope you are staying dry.
Greetings from waterlogged VA. steady soaking rain all night but no wind yet. just hope the trees all stay upright!
so far so good. i see the wind starting to pick up a bit, we have very tall old trees all around the back of us that are known to come down on a whim. They are in the neighbor’s yard behind us. Xshub had a massive amount of pruning down while we were in Italy and one of our own dead trees taken down, but i still worry about the ones behind us.
41 and drizzling here. It would be a quite depressing day had the Steelers lost yesterday.
especially since they were garbed so ridiculously! LOL!
Chan wore a bee costume last halloween, i believe she could have played for the steelers yesterday! seriously, if you are going to wear something like that, embrace it fully and put antennae on the helmets!
Those throwback uniforms need to be thrown back to where they came from. I couldn’t tell if it was a convention of giant bumblebees or a jailbreak.
A+++ and the mere thought of a naked obama makes me want to HURL! and yet teenaged girls dream of losing their virginity to him??? he’s a FAIRY plain as day!
our Texas Cav, Jules, goes so completely against type. he’s enormous for a cav, and he insists on going out into the rain. he sits looking out the window at it, and then scratches to go out. our other cavs despised getting wet!
A+++ oh that would be fantastic!
Looks like Victory.
And horizontal stripes on 300+ lb men is not flattering. LOL
Did Barack really go to that college or
Has Trumped trumped him with a sockdolager?
Orly Taitz tried a suit
Kenyan born? Point is moot
And His Highness won’t even acknowledge ‘er
My daughter in VA threw a sockdolager at me yesterday when she called to tell me all of the storm precautions she had taken for her family (lots of cooking and shopping.) I asked if they had voted yet. “Voted? I can’t do that unteil the 6th.” I told her that everyone else in the storm beseiged parts of the country was voting early because of potential lengthy power outages.
Honest to God. Sometimes I fell like I have failed as a mother. I’m not even sure that her husband is registered. It has become a sore point between us. He’s a wonderful husband and father, but he doesn’t believe in voting.
Well he is from Texas, so he has storms in his genes.....;^)
