Ouch. Monday night was the first time I heard my daughter apply that label to herself, and the word didn't please me. She and six friends/coworkers were about to watch the final Obama-Romney debate on the large-screen TV in our suburban basement.
These twenty-something kiddies were enjoying our hospitality because it was free. They're a company (founder, partners, contractors, trainee), part of the start-up trend whereby young persons hang out at coffee shops, staring into laptops, trying to start the next Foursquare or Fab and make a billion dollars. Until that happens, they can't afford things like airfare or hotels. So in order to attend a conference in the city near us, they had driven cross-country in a minivan and were staying at our house for four and a half days.
Up to this point, neither my husband nor I had said a word to them about politics or cultural norms in general. When they brought in large quantities of beer and liquor and stayed up late consuming it, we said nothing. We did not inquire about the marital status of the couple cohabiting in the main guest room. On Sunday, we went to church but did not try to recruit them to go with us. We were not merely nonjudgmental, but supportive, stocking up on groceries to meet their various dietary needs and keeping quiet while they occupied the kitchen, "co-working."
Tolerant I am. But being told to leave my own basement did not cut it.

Be gentle Johnny...Do u have kids?......... or dogs for that matter....the secret is...my rogue dog died in the woods.......under normal circumstances........Do your own DD as to hunting dogs and habits...*W*...U got a recipe for venison and partridge....both out of season?..before u punk me....he could have never paid the taxes if hed won that battle...but his off spring are great........ Teach a child the way it should go and it will not depart from it.
Same training works for dogs. Ya gotta start early, or be really harsh if you start late.

Now that they are gone, and their "meeting" is over you should, just as quietly, politely, and calmly, change the locks on your doors and lock your daughter out. Leave a note outside telling her to drive to one of her friend's homes and stay there for free while they all get their lives together. She has intruded on your hospitality and motherly instincts too long and has thrown all your good intentions back in your face. She won't die, she won't suffer, she has friends who should be glad to help her. And, she might just learn a lesson the hard way. It seems that is something she missed in college, isn't it?
Venison and partridge are covered by Escoffier (look him up).
Dogs are dogs, kids are kids. They will do what they do, a guiding hand at the right moment corrects behavior that is unacceptable and re-enforces good behavior.
Negative consequences for bad stuff, positive results for good stuff. Works miracles.

Wow, wallpaper parents.
“Teach the child the way he/she should go and they will not depart from it.”
Man..it should be so easy. ;)
She fought the good fight?
It sounds like for twenty something years they did nothing but retreat
er... check out the link in post #19
what do you think?
prison time?
My Father looked at me with his finger pointed at the ceiling and asked me, what is that? I said, the ceiling?
He replied, that's the roof over your head that I pay for.
I got my allowance, by getting up at 6:30 A.M. every other Saturday and going to work with my Father at his Gas Station. I was there anywhere from 10 to 14 hours.
As my Father told me while I was complaining about the long hours, nobody owes you a living so get back to work.
That's the advice I have followed all my life.
Negative consequences for bad stuff, positive results for good stuff. Works miracles. <<
why do i like u anyway?...*G*... You’re a blessed man J Random.........Keep the faith!!...
BTW...do you like mustard pickles?
“Same training works for dogs. Ya gotta start early, or be really harsh if you start late.”
Ya gotta start early. There is no ‘or.’ If you punish them because you didn’t teach them properly in the first place, they will be even more turned off and you’ll never be able to reach them when they are older.
A friend of my wife has a 20-something son that just showed up at their home to live for awhile (with his wife). After a week of not looking for work, helping out, etc. they told him they couldn’t stay in the house anymore.
“Well - how about in a tent in the backyard?”
They said that would be okay. Until another week went by and they heard the son say something to a friend. “Yeah man - work is for suckers”. The tent and everything else was soon on a heap at the curb.
Hard to comprehend people with an attitude like that.
“with his wife”-now that I don’t quite get.
I don't know that nor do you.
Sometimes you can give children the best foundation in life that you can. At some point they have to find their own way. They go thru some goofy phases. It seems that the youth of today go thru those phases at an older age.
The lady sat thru most of a debate with several know it all, rude (including her daughter) young “warriors” (legends in their own minds).
She interjected the opposite view. No way they would have jumped up and said “yeah!! you are right!!” But she may well have planted a seed or two in all of their young, mushy brains.
A seed that could grow and return them to family teachings. At least her daughter's.
Well hey - he has his own tent and everything!
of course on the bright side...if I go 2 for 3 in baseball...I'm gonna win the title!
that analogy is specious.
Yep...young people are like trying to herd cats.
The “free will” thing can cause them to stray.
Spoiled children grow up to be spoiled adults...
People that marry spoiled adults mostly end up divorcing them..
People that hire spoiled adults must watch them closely for many reasons.. because they are spoiled..
Spoiled adults usually are democrats but some become republicans.. even libertarians..
Raising spoiled children is a crime against society..
