It was an alien world, with carbon, sulfur spilling out of rocks, and a "Gorn" running around in a rubber suit.

Add in that the alien that put them their stated that there would be "weapons" to be found...

So it not bamboo made in to a cannon...it was a cannon made to look like bamboo
