The ugly, skinny cows ate up the seven cows that looked healthy and fat. Then Pharaoh woke up.
We all live behind a door. I don't intend to “hide” behind a door but the door is there and in a SHTF situation, I'd better not stand behind the door. Most people think a door is protection, but it isn't unless it's thicker metal than my door, according to the responses I have on this thread.
My gun is readily accessible and ready to use quickly if I need it. This gun is more protection than the door.
“Also, what percentage of the population was involved in agriculture in 1812, compared to today?”
Probably 75% with another %15 in fishing and livestock for a total of 90% participating in food production. Also, many farmers had additional businesses like furniture and farming application manufacturing.
My wife and I took a twelve-weekend course to become members of a neighborhood emergency team. One of the first things we were told is to take care of our own families first — then go check our neighbors. I’m sure most police and fire departments get similar instructions.
I like agribusiness. It keeps billions of people alive. ;)

Hopefully you can have some friends nearby that you all can watch each other’s back and keep the bad guys out of the neighborhood.

I live in Colorado where 1/3 is Defense/Federal, 1/3 is all kinds of other, and 1/3 is Ag. Half the State lands are Ag, 5% city, and the rest is mountains. We grow lots of food products and raise many cattle. The best beef I have ever had comes from here.
“2.6% in agriculture today”
Yep, <3% are in Ag. 18% are in power production. 7% manufacturing. Automation and power has let us have great lives compared to any time in history.

“One of the first things we were told is to take care of our own families first...”
In my EMT training, the first thing hammered into us was don’t enter an emergency medical situation unless we were sure our own bodies would be safe.
Long story... short point.
I live in an old house... built in 1913. The front door isn’t as tight as I’d like, so, in the winter when the cold winds blow, I seal it up and we use just the back door. Once I heard a knock on the back door in the middle of the night. As usual in those circumstances, I answered the door with a pistol in my hand. When I opened the door I saw a policeman who wanted some information about a neighbor. I laid the pistol on top of the refrigerator and continued to talk with him. He didn’t seem to be concerned about the gun or my actions. YMMV.
That’s an interesting stat. My slaves are AWESOME! They can make furniture, manufacture metals works, and even build these gas engine things! I am impressed.
The real interesting things is most people don’t take advantage of all that is actually out there such as paying for house cleaning or a concierge to take their cars for oil changes or pick up the laundry. I know, a bit much by average standards, but such services do exist and most people spend more on cell phones for the family than they do on these great time savers. Of course, people must use that extra time for something other than to watch TV for it to pay off. The wife and I both work far more than 40 hours/week, but most professionals do, and having extra slaves comes in handy to let us do that without feeling overwhelmed. I am a handyman type and do all of my usual repairs and upgrades but paying for extra time of someone else comes in handy and let’s me do all those things. I have also learned to trust ordering online and letting delivery save the time of shopping for many items.
If he's breaking into my house and stealing, he has bad intentions. If he needs food for his kids, he can ask me with good intentions and I'll try to help.
It doesn’t matter because we won’t be living in 1812.
There are sixty one families in this gated townhouse complex. Most are retired and there are a number of older widows. However, there are older men here and those are more likely to be veterans than younger men are. Older veterans are deadly.
After Hurricane Ike, our power was off and that meant the gate was left open (and that gate is the only way in and out). Three young men walked through our gate and were met by two of our older guys. They told those men they had no business here and to leave. The guys said they were sent to pick up limbs. Our guys said we have a paid service to do that, so leave. The young guys left.
If we had a severe emergency situation, I would gather these men and I would work with them. The widows, except me, would be of no use as far as protection is concerned.
I think the families of these widows would come get them as that happened before Ike got here.
I do not consider myself among the “elderly” widows but I am likely older than all of them. And, I'm likely older than anyone on this thread, however, as Reagan said, I won't hold your youth and inexperience against you.
I've done that, btw, for over a year, in an unheated shack on the side of a mountain with no commercial electricity and only a manual well for water.
It sucks. You spend all your time surviving from day to day, and get very little time to do anything else.

I do have a rocking chair, but it sounds like you don't need one yet.

“as Reagan said, I won’t hold your youth and inexperience against you.”
Nope, and guys like me would easily come to your aid if those ‘inexperienced’ didn’t keep to themselves.
We are at a stand-off as I want you to come here. I have more food storage, good for 25 years, and water source than you do.
However, your offer stuns me. We know each other fairly well now, and I know you don't want to share your abode with anyone, especially a woman. You see, I wouldn't eat kippers (or whatever the name of that stuff is) on Sunday or any other day. But, you could eat what you want.
Due to the business I was in most of my life, I am not judgmental and don't try to control anyone and I would expect the same from you.
Anyone living with you would raise their security level to high as you are the ultimate survivor in all categories.
