I read a paper a few years back that did the math on that, and the upshot was that most folks today have the equivalent of 25 slaves working for them, what with automation and power.

That’s an interesting stat. My slaves are AWESOME! They can make furniture, manufacture metals works, and even build these gas engine things! I am impressed.

The real interesting things is most people don’t take advantage of all that is actually out there such as paying for house cleaning or a concierge to take their cars for oil changes or pick up the laundry. I know, a bit much by average standards, but such services do exist and most people spend more on cell phones for the family than they do on these great time savers. Of course, people must use that extra time for something other than to watch TV for it to pay off. The wife and I both work far more than 40 hours/week, but most professionals do, and having extra ‘slaves’ comes in handy to let us do that without feeling overwhelmed. I am a handyman type and do all of my usual repairs and upgrades but paying for extra time of someone else comes in handy and let’s me do all those things. I have also learned to trust ordering online and letting delivery save the time of shopping for many items.
