Naked college freshman, 18, shot dead by campus police after he 'charged at officer' (Alabama)

In a tragic and bizarre incident a University of Alabama student who was naked has been fatally shot after charging a campus police officer early on Saturday morning.

University officials said that the confrontation occurred after the officer went outside the police station to investigate a banging noise that was coming from his office window.

Confronted with 18-year-old Gilbert Thomas Collar who was acting erratically and wearing no clothes, the officer shot the student once in the chest after he repeatedly charged.

Authorities said that the officer attempted to retreat several times in an attempt to defuse the situation but that the officer was left with no choice but to shoot when Collar made one final charge.

Collar, who had only recently enrolled at the University of South Alabama was shot at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday moening outside the USA Police Department on Stadium Drive .

'We can't comment beyond the statement,' said Ayers after he read a prepared statement during a news conference this afternoon on the campus.

'University of South Alabama Police report that an officer shot and killed an individual at approximately 1:30 a.m., Oct. 6, after the man attacked the officer just outside the police department on Stadium Drive The deceased has been identified as a USA student.'

The former high school wrestler's coach could hardly speak when interviewed by his hometown newspaper The Wetumpka Herald this morning.

'I remember the first time he walked into the wrestling room,' said Jeff Glass.

'He was such a natural. He was the only wrestler I coached who wrestled varsity for six years. That takes more heart than I can tell you. We began our tenure in Wetumpka wrestling at the same time. He was a physical, spiritual and mental warrior. And I love him like my own.'

Then maybe they should have become furniture salesmen instead of cops if they’re such scared cowards.

You JBT boot-lickers will excuse any screw-up by cops.

There was a time when shooting an unarmed man was regarded in a very bad light. I note the officer has the standard line down pat. Did it never occur to him, to summon other officers and subdue this man? Nope. Blam, blam. I felt my life was threatened.

Sometimes it goes bad, but the majority of reported incidents validate the right-to-defense thingy that you just spit at. If you saw a well-muscled college wrestler coming at you, you might also feel that you might be in pretty serious trouble...Unless you're there, you can only form opinions from intangibles.

Sounds like a lady cop.

Women in uniform are far more dangerous than men as they MUST resort to deadly force without warning as they are incapable of restraining a grown man any other way.

Statistics back this up.

Yet another reason why women should not be police nor firefighters.

He was the only wrestler I coached who wrestled varsity for six years.

I’ll bet he wishes he spent a seventh year in High School.

A lot of small HS in the south allow 7th and 8th graders to play varsity HS sports because of small enrollments....they do so in Florida. I would not be surprised if that is what the coach meant by 6 yrs of varsity.

My field of expertise (campus safety)...but I would need more info to really assess this situation

If this student charged repeatedly after the officer, and the officer made numerous attempts to avoid confrontation, then the shooting is justified.

Although tasers and pepper spray/mace may be preferred methods...remember that these schools do not have the money anymore for firearms AND tasers....and when that choice is made...schools go with firearms. Also, tasers and sprays get colleges in as much trouble as firearms....remember it is very liberal people you are dealing with at colleges and universities...even in the South. There would be as much outcry if this kid was tasered or sprayed.

As someone already mentioned, it is the responsibility of the parents and the student that the student is mature and adult enough to handle being on his own and in college. Acting stupid gets you into trouble

I worked as both a bouncer and as a prison guard and never carried a gun. And I restrained, moved, and contained people on a daily basis. Not all of them were cooperative.

Its amazing how some people will do work like that for years and manage to survive, isn’t it?

WOW.

73 “experts” responding to this post.

Let me point out a few things:

1. You weren’t there. You have no idea what actually happened.

2. Your response ought to vascilate somewhere in the area of “Gee, that sounds odd. I’m interested in hearing the entire context of the event so I don’t rush to judgement and say something ignorant”

3. You that posted “Gosh, why didn’t they just shoot him in the leg or something”: That was the same comment made by Hillary Clinton about US Soldiers in Bosnia. It was ignorant then and is equally ignorant now.

4. The last two shootings I’ve been involved in have involved death by cops wishers that got their wish - not by law enforcement’s choice but by their own.

5. Would anyone here rather read the headline “Drug Crazed Naked Man Shoots and Kills South Alabama Police Officer with His Service Weapon”.

6. They’re the Jaguars, by the way. No affilation with the 14 time National Champion University of Alabama Crimson Tide.

Rangers Lead the Way.

You reap what you sow. One of these days you’ll rue this day.

Someone you know, someone you love will suffer some form of dementia, become aggressive and get blown away with no forethought, no mercy and no attempt to humanely subdue by calling for backup, by either a jacked up, overly aggressive, well-muscled ‘roid cop or some chicken$hit, manhating, chunky buzzcut lesbian who should never have been within 100 yards of a police uniform and a position of authority, let alone brandishing a firearm at a member of the public she was hired to protect, not kill.

This is the stuff of police states a-borning and you, an erstwhile conservative, are cheering it on.

Here’s to the hope that you experience a no-knock “dynamic entry” in the middle of the night with no fatalities due to the endemic “wrong address” to wake your stupid self up. This was wrong and you refuse to see it. If anything is being spit upon here you’re doing it. You’re spitting on the grave of a college freshman, somebody’s son, no record, no nothing, just this one episode. No mercy, just blam. Dead. And all you have are rationalizations.

There will come a day. Snap out of it, you fool.

Bonnie Collar said she did not know why her son was acting that way when he was killed. She said he weighed 135 pounds and was 5-foot-7 with a wrestler's build.

The victim's mother describes her son as 5'7" and 135 lbs. I'm sure the officer was larger and outweighed him considerably. Sheds a little more light upon the ridiculous, excessive use of lethal force by this campus police officer.

Are you saying this campus police department did NOT carry tasers? Can you provide a link to back that up?

There would be as much outcry if this kid was tasered or sprayed.

That's garbage and you know it.

The officer is a man according to a statement from the school itself:

http://www.southalabama.edu/shtml/crimealert.pdf

"...the officer fired one shot with his police sidearm..."

P.S. (The first article kept referring to "the officer" without using a pronoun, so many of us probably were thinking this might be a female cop.)

It changes nothing I’ve told you.

1. You still weren’t there.

2. Your response was still off.

3. The leg comment was still ignorant.

4. I know what I’m talking about.

5. I’d rather not read a different headline.

6. Jags, not Tide.

Until you’ve been in a deadly force incident, you’ll never know. I can assure you that the majority of cops don’t run the streets hoping they get the opportunity to apply deadly force on a daily basis. It’s a life-changing event.

I reserve judgement until the entire story is told. My department was raked over the coals for the two DF incidents I was a part of and whne the entire story was brought to light, the press showed ZERO interest in reporting THAT protion.

...and that was in Mobile.

...and Rangers STILL Lead the Way.

This is your first and only reply to me, so you’re mistaken from the get-go and everything that follows is self-interested rationalization.

You are not the law and you are not above it. Deal with it. Killing the people you’re hired to protect is wrong. This college freshman was unarmed, he was five foot seven and all of 135 pounds. You lethal bunch of sissies, just blow him away and go have a dozen donuts during your paid administrative leave while his family mourns, high-five and yuk it up.

You protect and serve just what, again?
