In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
strepitous \STREP-i-tuhs\, adjective
boisterous; noisy.
Example sentences:
But what strepitous sounds, what harmonious tumult diverts my attention to another part ?
-- José Francisco de Isla, The History of the Famous Preacher, Friar Gerund de Campazas
Here is no idyllic meditative retreat from the strepitous city but a scene of virile actionfields sounding with human labor, vibrating with human energy.
-- Beulah B. Amram, "Swinburne and Carducci," The Yale Review
Etymology:
Strepitous stems from the Latin word strepit which meant "noise."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Which will be obvious and backfire on the people who saw this first debate.
obviously! i am just teasing you, but you are an Eeyore to the core!
yes, i don’t think it will work. But they are faulting Lehrer for letting the debate “get away from him,” which can only mean letting the debate go against O.
i would pay $ to have witnessed MOO and O’s first words to each other after that. clearly she would have said what the HELL was that? for starters!
Ann Coulter was her strepitous self this morning when she quipped that when Mitt’s sons hit the stage to congratulate their dad on the debate, Michelle Obama looked like she wanted to go home with Mitt, rather than Barack — anniversary, or not.
Another line that I liked was shen Mitt said that he had 5 sons so he was used to people repeating the same thing over and over, hoping that eventually he’d believe it, but Obama’s portrayal of Mitt’s tax plan was not accurate no matter how often he miis-portrays it. Zing
Some of the more hilarious lines from Twitter during the debate were Jonah saying shouldn’t Romney take out a bag labeled OBAMA’s LUNCH and start eating it. Dennis Miller said, i hope ASSKICKING is covered by Obamacare. And Laura saying that Obama was blinking out a hostage request for help to Valerie Jarrett. i was howling!
Someone noted that Sasha and Malia, sensing weakness, hit dad up for an increased allowance last night.
So, as I have no personal experience: What do the FReepers think of the debate?
Romeny hit it out of the park, not allowing Obama to get away with any of his mischaracterizations of Romeny’s economics. He was forceful, funny and engaging.
Obama rambled on, stammered and acted bored, petulant and testy.
It was a classic.
Romney kicked Obama’s butt.....he did it with facts a smile and persistently countering Obama’s lies. Mitt stood up for himself like the gracious business man that he is. Rumor had it he always has a good command of the details in any business deal, and this is the ultimate deal. He came through and I was cheering and laughing all through the debate. Twitter and FR were so slow I gave up on them. EVERYONE, lib and conservative alike were touting Romney’s command of the stage. Romney reintroduced himself, after weeks of Obama’s attack ads, and he connected with Americans. You missed an awesome night for conservatives.
Awesome summary of last night. Who is Candy Crowley?
Loved the clip. We watched it twice. You didn’t even need to listen to the sound — just look at their faces. Because I won’t sully my remote control by ever watching MSNBC, this was a first look for me. Hilarious!
To think — before Fox, I thought Chris Matthews was pretty sharp. We had just gotten cable during the OJ investigation when I first watched him and all was new to me. We didn’t connect to cable because of OJ, but the cable company finally made it to my rural area and offered free connections.
It was the dead of winter and my old TV blew up at about the same time. New TV, rabbit ears not included any more, no way to get on top of an icy roof to put up an outdoor antenna, so we connected to cable. I don’t think I’ve watched a local station since. LOL.
Then, I went to my daughter’s house in NJ and discovered Fox. Shortly thereafter, Fox News Channel became part of our cable line up, and the station is hardly ever off at this house.
That first winter, the cable lay on top of the ground across the snow. They came back in the spring to put it underground so we could mow the grass. That seems like an eon ago, but it is really only about 15 years ago.
Every time I start cheering about some great appearance on Fox, I remember how much of the country does not get cable, or FNC, or even talk radio.
My mom (who is 99 and a liberal) stopped watching TV as her hearing deteriorated. She refused to have cable which I offered to install in her house in CA. We moved her to a lovely assisted living place which includes cable TV and about 100 stations this summer, including Fox. We were there during the RNC convention. She has closed captioning and every time we visited her apartment, she had FNC on and was watching it devotedly. She’ll probably still vote for Obama, but she’s at least being exposed to another view.
And her old TV with rabbit ears? She could get 3 channels — one local, PBS, and the Hmong channel. No wonder she never watched any mmore. She was right — nothing on worth watching. There are millions of voters like her, unfortunately.
That puppet was on Fox & Friends this AM. One of his lines was the difference between him the puppet] and Joe Biden is that his [the puppet] boss knows what is going to come out of his mouth!
i live two miles outside the beltway and i recall how excited i was when CoxCable finally began carrying FNC! it was probably about that long ago too. It’s the only balanced reporting out there. i didn’t watch MSNBC or any tv last night, i relied on the “gauze” of Twitter to buffer for me! i don’t regret not seeing it contemporaneously, or even at all, i saw a few clips on F&F this AM to get the flavor and the tweeting was sufficient for me to know exactly what was being said and how it was going. You have the input from so many different people simultaneously, i felt better informed than if i had watched the debate because i had everyone’s impressions and what everyone was saying and that isn’t possible if you are actually watching the debate.
