Harry Houdini's Chinese Water Torture Cell, In this trick, Houdini was to escape an extraordinary contraption resembling a fish tank. This is filled with water while Houdini is placed head down, in full view of the audience. His feet are manacled and when the tank is covered it is difficult to imagine how he can possibly escape.

I’m told by my Dad (and I’m not sure how true it is) that my Grandfather knew Harry Houdini and once had dinner with him and his mother.

What I think is great about Houdini, is that he named himself that to mooch a bit off the celebrity of another famous magician named Houdin. Now, the only reason anyone remembers Houdin is because Houdini ripped off his name :)

Houdini died of appendicitis, but I remember my father telling me this version of the story.

“Houdini was reclining on his couch after his performance, having an art student sketch him. When Whitehead came in and asked if it was true that Houdini could take any blow to the stomach, Houdini replied groggily in the affirmative. In this instance, he was hit three times before Houdini could tighten up his stomach muscles to avoid serious injury. Whitehead reportedly continued hitting Houdini several more times and Houdini acted as though he were in some pain.”

He was supposedly famous about bragging about being able to take any punch in the stomach.

He supposedly did his water tower trick but died doing it because he was injured…that was my father’s version.

But now I know the truth.

There's a splendid recreation of Harry's water trick in the movie The Prestige, which is about two rival magicians trying to top one another over the years.

They're played by Huge Ackman (I always wanted to write it that way!) and Christian Bale, with Scarlett Johansson as eye candy, Michael Caine as a magic mechanic, and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla (!).

Jackman's character finally comes up with a truly amazing version of the water trick, with a distrubing twist at the end showing how "he" did it.
