Black woman stands her ground, kills white man
Spero News ^ | September 18, 2012 | Martin Barillas

Houston area investigators are looking into a stand-your-ground case where after a minor fender-bender, a 22-year-old white male was shot and killed by a 23-year-old black woman. During a morning commute, Crystal Scott and Jonathan Ables were in an accident and pulled into a Shell gasoline station to survey the damage.

According to Scott, Ables exited his truck and ran toward her driver-side door. Scott said he yelled and then hit her door and tried to open it. Fearing for her life, Scott pulled her pistol and shot Ables once through the driver’s window and struck him in the chest. Ables died at the scene.

A Harris County Sheriff’s spokesman, Sgt. Felipe Rivera said “From what we understand it was maybe just a minor accident,” while adding, “The information we’re getting is that it appeared to be a minor accident that turned into road rage.”

An eyewitness, who appeared on camera but has requested anonymity, said that he did not hear any threat in the seconds before Scott killed Ables. The witness was pumping gas and standing 15 feet away from Ables when a bullet ricocheted past him and struck his car. The bullet left a noticeable impression on the witness’s car.

As for Scott’s version of events, the witness said that if Ables had shouted or banged on the car, he would have heard it. “What drew my attention was the gunshot,” said the witness. “I just want to be sure that I do everything in my power that everything is fair. I care about it being fair,” he said. The Harris County sheriff’s department has not yet responded to Spero News’ request for any security footage of the shooting.

Nevertheless I'm torn.

On one hand..I don't think yelling, screaming and maybe whacking someone's car window justifies killing someone.

On the other hand, I don't know the mindset of the shooter.

Could they both be loons? Yep. Could the woman be trigger happy? Yep. Could the guy act like he's going to beat her to a pulp if he can get a hold of her? Yep.

I don't know...and you don't know.

Could she have just driven off, if the guy was in a threatening posture? Yep. Could she have avoided killing the guy. I'm pretty sure of that.

I could see her get charged. There are responsibilities that come with being armed. And from my view point....taking all that I know at this juncture into account she could have avoided shooting and killing the guy.

FWIW-

let's wait until more of the details are in before we reach conclusions.

Kind of like the Zimmerman/Martin case, right???

That's certainly how it looks to me. A human life is a human life and it shouldn't be taken lightly. However (and as we agree, we don't know the facts), she may not have had a legal obligation to avoid the shooting.

As much as I believe in Stand Your Ground laws, one of the unsettling issues is when the shooter can retreat and the issue of perceived "imminent great bodily harm" is in the seriously grey area.

And for everyone who's not going to spend the time trying to understand, let's make this clear again: I'm not saying SYG applied to this shooter.

Many of us condemned the media and the public for not waiting until the details were in before reaching conclusions in that case. We were right to do so.

I think we should apply the same standard here.

Do you agree?

There's always going to be part of the crowd siding with the shooter simply because they do that. Others will tend to side with the one who got killed, and that's 'cause they do that.

At the moment we don't even know if the woman's car was actually operable ~ she may have rolled off the highway to the nearest gas station and not gone any further because her engine stalled ~ we don't know.

I see no reason to draw conclusions on this one at this time ~ but we can still have fun speculating on what could have happened. Interesting that the dead guy had a rap sheet. Equally interesting is there are a couple of dozen women in the Houston area with the woman's same name ~ an unusual name!

We might even be able to lend some important analysis to a burning issue in this ~ why two shots rather than one, and why not three? Did they report on the weapon she had yet ~ if not why not.

Would that be like the conclusion you reached today about a dead man driving on a suspended license??? Ohhh but we mustn't reach any conclusions about those two bullet holes in his chest, right??? Are those the kind of conclusions you're talking about -- conclusions that cut both ways???

Regarding Zimmerman, he would be doing 25 to life right now if it weren't for those on the internet who have investigated the facts and reached conclusions that have kept the state and the 5th estate somewhat honest.

Gathering details and putting them together is what many on this forum and others do best.

Do you agree???

Don't let wtc911 bother you, UncleChip. He is Free Republic's Race Troll.

An example of his irrational folly starts at this post I made to him. He makes baseless accusations and refuses to back ANY of his claims.

Aren't you acting in the worst aspects of that case yourself? You've got this woman convicted of murder, in spite of the law and in spite of conflicting descriptions of what happened. How are you any different from those who wanted Zimmerman marched directly to jail without delay?

Zimmerman acted within the law in Florida. This woman acted within the law in Texas. Neither one deserves to be in jail for what they did.

Baloney. Martin was sitting on top of Zimmerman preventing him from getting up and beating his head in the ground. He had nowhere to retreat to. He was pinned to the ground. And he only fired once which was enough for self defense.

This woman shot from within the safety of her car and then got out and shot him again — possibly twice more.

And he was trying to get into her car. Under the law that's enough to justify her actions. She's not guilty just because you want her to be.

Based on what witness testimony?

You wrote that Scott has reason to lie about what happened.

How about instead of giggling with the girls you answer the question --- "Why does she have reason to lie?"

You are spending energy to avoid answering because it is the exact opposite of the position you take with Zimmerman.

Wonder why that is.

Now you are laughable. She got out of her car to shoot and kill him.
