During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:
There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what These are people who pay no income tax.

in response to those fundraiser comments you mentioned, Romney communications director Gail Gitcho issued this statement: Mitt Romney wants to help all Americans struggling in the Obama economy. As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work. Mitt Romneys plan creates 12 million new jobs in four years, grows the economy and moves Americans off of government dependency and into jobs.

Good!
It is bad, because government services SHOULD assist people on a short-term basis; and Romney does not distinguish between short term and long term dependency.
Writing off a lot of people - we can never convince people to take responsibility? Bad.
This was stupid. Very depressing.
“.....if we get a “Taxageddon,” as they call it, January 1st, with this president, and with a Congress that can’t work together, it’s it really is frightening.”
Yes, it sure is.
Obama must go.....
Honestly how can this cost Mitt any votes. They were voting for barry the dummy anyway.
Diane sawyer and the libs really are mad that this is an issue
ALL taxes, perhaps.
Effective income taxes? Incorrect. Let's be frank - it doesn't count as "paying income tax" when you get all that was deducted from your paycheck back, and perhaps more, via a combination of refunds, EITC, and other tax credits.
There's a reason the bottom 50% pays around 2% of the income tax burden in this country.
Perhaps if you had listened to each of the several video clips, your post would read differently.
The Libs on posting on Facebook are going to be off the chain tomorrow! Can’t wait to see it! Romney better not appologize for what he said either.
Notice this came out on the day that conclusive evidence demonstrated that Obama, Hillary and Susan Rice were blatant, noxious liars.
Wrong assessment. A lot of white people on social security vote for Republicans. They don’t pay income tax but are conservatives rather than marxist and Christian rather than amoral. The only guarenteed population Obama has is the permanent welfare mob.
That Romney writes off that many people shows, once again, that the GOP consultants are out of touch with Republican voters. Pretty pitiful.
When I heard the video he just was stating a fact nothing more or less. The truth sometimes has to hurt to help

It might not matter much, but National Review thinks that Romney confused his numbers. NR did calculations though to show that Romney is in the right area with 47%.
Apparently 47% is just the number of people who pay no net tax, meaning they don’t mail a check to the IRS on April 15th. But that could include hard-working people who just had too much tax taken out of their pay checks during the year.
NR includes quotes from a professor saying 40%+ is correct.
It means that Romney did not learn his lesson from FL when his words were distorted about the poor.
We want a communicator to explain how and why capitalism is the engine of prosperity for ALL Americans, not someone to run people down.
Romney is stupidly, needlessly dividing Americans just as blatantly as Obama has been doing.
I hope I am wrong, but this is bad - because it feeds a stereotype.
Probably because neither Romney and his crew, nor the older white people on Social Security, think of Social Security as “welfare” nor as “dependency on government.”
Nor should they, since (theoretically at least) Social Security funds paid out were originally paid in, though we know this isn’t the case for the younger people on “disability” who draw from the program.
So there, 53% is 51% MORE than was promised.
Now, the big reason we've withdrawn much of the federal personal income tax from the backs of the lower 50% is a guy named RONALD REAGAN!
We have a candidate running for us who actually opposed Ronald Reagan ~ and he's telling this crazy Hannity story that the way to deal with the poorer half of the nation is to raise their federal personal income taxes.
You guys are nuts. You are trying to lose this election for everybody with this tale!
