The fellow mentioned as getting a deferment is Homer’s father’s brother-in-law. According to Homer’s aunt he tried to volunteer for the military but was turned down because of his vital occupation as a cattle rancher and grower of grain. So he put headlights on his tractor, enabling him to spend more time working. Like he wasn’t putting in enough hours already.
