Huh? Just because something happens offscreen doesn't mean it never happened. We never saw Kirk promoted to Admiral, and yet he was an Admiral in the first Star Trek movie. Obviously his career would've continued forward.
As for the second point, seriously? He's a KLINGON. He doesn't look all that differently from Klingons portrayed by white actors. Moreover, the "black-man-as-leader" motif has been used long before 2008. I don't see what issue you could possibly have with that so long as it's done well. Sisko was easily one of the best captains on Star Trek, and it wasn't because he was black.
