There are always people who think it’s just fine to make us all property of the state. Like Obama said, government is the one thing we all belong to!

My son spent 5 honorable years in the Marine Corps (E5) including a tour to Iraq. Like most Marines, he was a combat soldier. The last thing I would have wanted was for him to have some saggy pants africanhyphenamerican draftee from Detroit having his back. I don’t want any of our warriors, USMC or otherwise, to be in that position. We took a hell of a beating from the homegrown communist trash because of the draft during the Vietnam War (not conflict) and their crap gave aid and comfort to the enema. Never again.

I was a draftee. Viewed it as my duty to serve and did so to the best of my ability. By the time I got to be truly effective it was time to go home -— and that’s just as true of the “shooting action” part of it as well as my normal MOS.

Years later as I read more and more about the war I was in I came to understand how ineptitude and duplicity got us into it in the first place and in the end what a nearly total waste it was. Thank God I wasn’t wounded or killed, as the “sacrifice” would truly have been in vain.

That said, it I believe it was for me and most everyone I know in the same situation a growing, maturing, character building experience -— and one that taught me to NEVER again trust any government including ours.

So, while the idea of everyone owing their country military service arguably has certain attractions, I doubt the American public will be any less manipulable by virtue of bringing back the draft, and it would certainly lower the overall effectiveness of our military.

I sometimes wonder if the political system envisioned by Robert Heinlein in Starship Troopers wouldn’t be better than what we have now. Only those who served in the military were considered Citizens with full voting rights. Everyone else was a civilian. If you weren’t willing to risk your life for your country you didn’t get a say in setting government policy.

Lefties only believe in "choice" when it comes to abortion, and they'd rather have abortion be mandatory, too.

since June, 105 American troops have been killed — a grim addition to the 2,104 U.S. fatalities chalked up there since 2001

Since 2001 over 3,500 people have been killed in Detroit. We should draft all leftist mush heads to serve a 3 year tour of duty in Detroit to experience the results of voting Democrat-tick.

The military doesn’t need a bunch of functional illiterates.

No, Nope, NO FLIPPIN’ WAY!!!

The easiest way to get a military full of people that don’t want to be in the military is to make duty mandatory.

I want to know where all of the gals who are demanding ‘equal’ are on requiring girls age 18 to register for the Selective Service? If are sons are good enough to register then our girls should likewise be registering for Selective Service. Want equal? Make it equal? Do it now! Go ahead Pelosi, Wasserman Schultz, Boxer, Clinton, Jackson Lee, Johnson, Mikulski, Murray, Norton, Sanchez, McCaskill, Feinstein, Gillibrand, Waters!

The Draft isn't the problem anyway. Congress sets the maximum number of allowed active duty service members. We are still at 1996 End Troop Strengths or within a few thousand. Even Right after 9/11 there was no increase called for.

Basically our Dear Leaders starting from the Clinton Terms continuing through W's terms and Obamas terms have been closing bases and decommissioning ships. {our Navy is at a low number of ships unseen since pre-WW1.}

So if we have a draft anyone got ideas as to where they will train and be stationed? Right now the military due to the economy can pretty well have it's pick of volunteers. The 1982 Recession was how we went from undermanned under Carter to all services manned under Reagan.

There was a time when you could train a man for two to four months and then deem him combat-ready and ship him out. With today’s high-tech combat, those days are long gone.

If we keep the 2-year commitment of my draftee days, we will spend most of the two years training up to basic functionality. It makes no sense to pay people for 8,12, 16 months of training and then put them in a combat unit for a year (or less). Inclusive of trainers and support, 70-80% of the Army would be in training or supporting training, and about 5-8% would be actual combat troops.

The only ones demanding a draft are those who want it to self destruct.

Better Idea.

Create a new Service akin to the Coast Guard. Call it the Border guard and everyone serves one year right out of high school. Build bases every 15 miles on the borders with and a 20 foot high wall on both borders patrolled 24/7.

6 weeks of training should be plenty being the only responsibility is to shoot anyone who enters the no man's land that stretches 250 yards out from the wall and to maintain the wall and bases.

The hate-mongering Left once again salivates at the merest possibility that ANY wealthy or privileged white male might get forced to live a more humble existence for a few years... even if it means reversing their positions on numerous issues they once detested.

Okay, jackass, name the needless “military crusades” that our brave men and women have fought and died for?

Never mind. Maybe you should just STFU until you learn to prioritize your concerns and speak respectfully of those you pretend to represent.

You are correct. An all-volunteer, professional military is easily manipulated into being the strong arm of politicians, instead of Americans defending America.

I believe there are two issues here. Drafted “citizen soldiers” doing their duty and service to the country are the best guarantee against the military becoming a political force, as it is today. And we should stop our international military interventionism. Our military should strictly be for national defense, as the Constitution describes.
