STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities on Monday investigated widespread reports of a foul odor detected across the San Fernando Valley.
Shortly after 5:00 a.m., a “rotten egg-type” smell was reported “widely across (and possibly beyond) the north San Fernando Valley and Foothill communities of Los Angeles”, according to Brian Humphrey with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
No illnesses or any specific hazard has been associated with the odor, Humphrey told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.
The sulfur-type odor — which Humphrey said “appears to be organic in nature” — had been reported as far west as Simi Valley and as far east as Cathedral City and Perris in Riverside County.
While officials worked to investigate the source of the smell, officials did acknowledge the smell could be affecting a wider swath of Southern California.
Stephen Harrison with the National Weather Service office in San Diego told KNX 1070′s Vytas Safronikas that whatever the source or sources of sulphuric odor, wind currents have been moving in an east to west direction from the Salton Sea into parts of the Greater Los Angeles area.
“It’s always possible to get some kind of odor coming from the Salton Sea up through the Coachella Valley through the Banning Pass and into the Inland Empire,” said Harrison.
Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Monica Carazzo said the odor is affecting schedules at some local schools, including Osceola Street Elementary.
“Some schools are implementing a rainy day schedule, meaning that once kids get their lunch, they go inside of the classroom, recesses are inside, that type of thing,” said Carazzo. “But that’s school by school.”
Residents do not need to call 911 to report the odor unless they are experiencing a medical emergency, Humphrey said

Number of stations running through the middle of the country from North to South is amazing compared with the remainder except Southern Cali. Telling! Also, BL worked for years hardening bridges in the Meridian fault line areas.

Supposed to be a “bunker-buster nuke” that knocked out the DC elite underground city, or something like that. The seismo did look interesting of the quake. Not sure about the rest of they nuke-theory.
The mobile array system was aligned that way for 2011 it will along the East Coast next year...

It was a tellign visual as to where along the midsection of the contitent where the lithosphere is quite unstable. Fracking my butt...!

Btw, there are increased bubbling and tremors near the South Louisiana sinkhole with reports of activity extending 85 miles West to Lake Charles. Also reports of new leakage from the BP well.

Then like a sweeping arm it has been moving east since 2009.
I have been keeping tabs on the bayou bowl....seen some fantasy reports but your idea of the impact holds some credence but I would think that the area suffered tremendous stress because of the Ozark/Ouachita Orogeny. U can clearly see the effect of such in this area here.

Coast Guard reported a 4 mile long slick, near the BP well.
I screwed it up... LC has been on my mind of late. It's 125 miles to LC from Bayou Corne and the site they're talking about in the article (Lake Peigneuris) is 51.76 miles west of Bayou Corne according to google earth, but they mention 80 miles west of Bayou Corne in the article.

I should have referred to the number of detectors in the midlands and southern California as compared with the rest of the nation and not assumed they were installed first. :) Is the video a correct representation of the current distribution?
That's the best way to prevent leaks, get it out ASAP! :)

Don't quote me, and I don't remember where I read it, but I "think" I saw confirmation of testing that proved it was oil with the same composition as the BP well.

Actually that could be just waste water (mostly salt water) from producing oil wells, it can be slightly radioactive naturally (Shales and sands from down below).
Call them salt water disposal wells in the trade.
Read the article, I'm a lot closer than Lockport or Houma and have felt no shaking or loud bangs or mysterious thunder sounds.
Have a lot of doubts about the article and it's accuracy.
Think they are trying to stir up crap that really isn't’t there for sensation purposes.
My money is still on the root cause of hot-spots/plumes found to be the core, through sun/moon gravitational attraction in conjunction with the earth's rotation, pumping hotter molten materials near the core through fissures in the mantle vs convection.
I wouldn't be surprised if we learn someday that scientists believe fissures in the mantle through expansion, creation or colapse, contribute to or cause the relatively deep earthquakes.
Yeah, I thought about that to. The author seems somewhat inclined toward that purpose. In any event, I hope the Cajun stays safe! ;)
