Here is a better way to look at this ... the government should not be in the marriage business, and marriage is not a political issue. Gay people, for the most part, express a desire to get married for the benefits that are extended to married couple [rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children]. Government should allow people to engage in civil unions [this includes men and women], only. Marriage should be left to the churches. Then, any one can have a civil union [man/lady, lady/lady, man/man, mom/son, dad/daughter, brother/sister, person/multiple people] which extends to that civil union the governmental rights that married couple now enjoy which include the marriage tax credit, right to pass assets without taxation upon death, the right to make life ending decisions [pulling the plug]. The whole issue dies in a blink. This should not have to be a political thing. Moving the line in the sand never works ... better just to erase it. I believe that my wife and I are married in GOD's eyes and believe that we have a civil union in the eyes of government. It should not be anything different then a partnership, LLC, or LP.

I knew someone or something was responsible for this ill-advised thread.
Not in the least. My GOD expects me to do everything that I can to not destroy myself, and to not allow others to destroy me. We will all have to answer to Him in the end. You should not allow yourself to be a victim. Jesus said, "If you don't have a sword trade your cloak for one." We are required to stop people from destroying us. Two gay men in a civil union getting a $4,000 tax credit on that civil union to match the $4,000 tax credit I get for my "government sponsored marriage" will not destroy me. Allowing a government to strip me of my ability to survive via debt can destroy me. Read into it what you will.
Hello, Joker! Not acknowledging homosexuals/ room-mates/polygamists etc., as civil unions IS less government. By creating a whole new group of people with “rights” you are making the government bigger.
You want to change the tax codes, fine, address that. You want to change inheritance laws, hospital visitation laws, contract laws, address those. You have a problem with government benefits, fees, tolls, then address each of those issues.
Despite the vehemence of your assertions, you are not supporting less government. You want to create a new bureaucracy: a behemoth that includes every contorted, perverse relationship stamped with a government seal of approval.
I see that your social liberalism includes lying, this is your own vanity thread promoting homosexual marriage.
No they won’t. Our fight is harder, because not only do we have to push back, but we have to hold ourselves up to a standard liberals can’t comprehend. I don’t think the Earthly war is lost, however grim things may look.
As I said, you worship the material GOD of this Earthly realm: the Demiurge.
Just like you, I’m a lapsed Catholic, but even I know that isn’t the righteous path.
Tell you what, my neighbor is a lesbian and was in a relationship for 7 years. They signed a Domestic Partnership Agreement so her lover could get health coverage. Now they’ve split up, and oh boy is it ugly. Ex-partner is stalking, threatening, demanding 50% of her property even though my neighbor was the wage-earner and her lover was usually unemployed or semi-employed... gays wanting to be legally tied to one another have no idea the mess they are asking for.
Okay, you guys have convinced me that i have hit the left guard rail. I did some damage to the left side of my political vehicle. I am veering back to the right. Homos, lesbos cannot get married. The should pay more in taxes. We heterosexuals should get tax breaks. Heck, marriage should come with some special treatment because we do so much to hold civilization together. Have a happy Saturday.
First, the "Legalize Gay Marriage" crowd is entirely off in their lone slogan. It is not illegal today to promise to love your significant other for your lifetimes... nor to cohabitate for decades... nor to have a ceremony in front of your friends and loved ones... nor to have a bad party afterwards and do silly dances and toasts... nor to do a week in the Bahamas after that... Gay marriage is NOT illegal in any way.
Secondly, as the author noted, the primary problem is that the government treats MARRIED folk differently than SINGLE folk. This is a VERY important distinction to keep in mind. How we are taxed, who can make healthcare decisions, who can carry whom on their insurance... all these (and more) are dictated by laws and regulations to treat SINGLE people differently from MARRIED people. If our governemnt stops differentiating between the two groups, and allows the market to decide who they might insure or not (thus INCREASING FREEDOM, fer cryin' out loud), then this divisive issue goes away overnight.
Read that again... carefully. Nothing written above makes any judgment call on homosexuality, religion, Equal Treatment, or secular sanction of religious sacraments!!!
THAT is the solution to the issue... but as our Forebears taught us, no Government of any stripe will let go of any avenues of power and control if they don't have to... and thus the silly notion that "family needs to be promoted over remaining single" somehow is more important than the myriad of Equal Treatment and Freedom of Religion issues that are raised is clearly a meaningless canard to help government continue to control as many social aspects of our lives as possible.
The only reason that the Gay Marriage Dabate exists is because government wants to tell us that they should treat married people differently from single people. Any journalism major who offers any other perspective is simply looking for ratings and drama.
I like the alcohol example, by the way-
Long before belief in the One and True God was as prevalent as it is now, the polytheistic Greeks in Athens co-opted marriage from the temples and priests of various deities and collected money for civil marriage licenses. They also declared that citizens of the city-state of Athens could not marry non-citizens-homosexual (I dislike polite euphemisms like “gay”-call it what it) marriages happened there, too. We all know what happened to the Athenians...
The post-republic Romans turned marriage into an affair of state, too, complete with homosexual marriage, and the non-citizen marriage thing-so if you wanted a “real” marriage in Rome-one that was sanctified and recognized by whatever diety you believed in, you went to a temple, not a government building. We certainly know what happened to the Roman Empire...
When the French revolutionaries were busy removing aristocratic heads and singing “La Marseillaise”, they were also forming-by force-a Godless government. They took marriage from the churches and made it a civil marriage. At one point during Robespierre’s reign of terror, couples could be executed if they got married by a priest and got caught-marriage belonged to the state, and was not a sacrament. France still isn’t exactly a bastion of Christian tolerance, is it?
Just a few good examples of why government should never have charge of “marriage”, (or anything else that belongs to God). Let them call it a civil contract, period-but not marriage, and don’t let JP’s hold “ceremonies” that they call marriage. Marriage is a sacrament performed by the clergy, and is between a man and a woman-anything else is a civil contract, period. Forgive the rant, please...
What a load of silly ramblings, marriage has done just fine in America, now you lefties want to destroy it by using whatever argument gets you to polygamy and the homosexual agenda.
Other than that, if you are not doing anything to hold civilization together don't come asking for recognition. I went to a wedding in June. It was the guys third and her second. Those five marriages have done more to hold civilization together than all the homos and lesbians in the world, combined.
School is back in session, aren't there kids you could be dumbing down and giving free contraception to?
Why so weird, or so dishonest? Homosexuals and heterosexuals are not taxed differently.
Thank you for the compliment on the alcohol. Other than that the rest of your post makes you sound a little light in your cowboy boots. You better not come out from behind that cactus, they might not take too kindly to your type down thar’
What about a divorce with a battle over property/taxes?
What about a religiously owned business forced to accommodate the wedding/couple? What about adoption?
They don’t want to get married for most part. They want society to declare their relationship equal and valid.
I did not say that. What I said is that people within "government sanctioned institutions" are taxed differently than people that "are not allowed to have government sanctioned institutions". Quit coming at me, we have us what sounds like a gay-cowboy and a teacher to fight. The real libs are landing. GOD would expect that we unite against this abomination.
And your point is what, here?
“I dont think the Earthly war is lost, however grim things may look.”
I agree, things are not lost. But the fact that they’re hitting up this site now, and NOT getting zotted, is disappointing.
“...marriage should come with some special treatment because we do so much to hold civilization together.”
Thanks, it’s great to see people coming back to what they always knew was right.
