So what’s the deal with the retro headsets? Is somebody screwing with their radio feed and forcing them to communicate by wire?

I wondered the same thing when I first saw them on night 2 of the RNC. If you saw night 1 (pre-headsets), they were having difficulty with the noise/music coming from downstairs. The headsets help with that, I believe.

Maybe they’re those noise canceling headsets.

I know that’s what I would wear.

I think that's so the talking heads can hear each other.

Their set oversees the convention hall. Tuesday night when we watched, they did not wear the headsets. The sound/noise/cheering from the convention hall below/behind them was so loud that we couldn't hear them and turned off the TV. They were screaming at each other, presumably, because they couldn't hear each other either.

Wednesday they wore the headsets. I'm sure they hear each other through the headsets, and it blocks out the noise below.
