I think that's so the talking heads can hear each other.

Their set oversees the convention hall. Tuesday night when we watched, they did not wear the headsets. The sound/noise/cheering from the convention hall below/behind them was so loud that we couldn't hear them and turned off the TV. They were screaming at each other, presumably, because they couldn't hear each other either.

Wednesday they wore the headsets. I'm sure they hear each other through the headsets, and it blocks out the noise below.

The headsets are so the producer/remote video truck crew can clue them in for camera shots on them, the speaker or the crowd, to impart info to them and for notice of breaks and for a countdown on returning from breaks.
(ever catch the talking heads doing something crazy when the commercials end and then they get that sheepish "I got caught" look? LOL)

If this was aired somebody went to break/commercials very slowly.
