I challenge anyone to come up with the date at which the Gore family (for example) switched from Republican to Democrat. The Gores were always Democrats. They were both Jefferson Davis Democrats and Lyndon Johnson Democrats.

This notion that the left supports centralization and the right supports federalism is very strange. In old Mexico it was the conservatives who supported centralization while left wingers like Benito Juarez supported not only a decentralized federal union but American-style capitalism as well.

Actually, once you remove race as an issue, the parties did realign with Dems who were, say, national security conservatives or free market "classic liberals" crossing over to the GOP. We didn't accept the Dem view of race, they accepted ours.

The GOP has generally resisted race politics, while the DNC has always had race front and center. A lot has changed in terms of race in America, but the DNC's obsession with race has not changed.
